Annette...I am glad you are OK. I just ran to the top of the stairs as the ambulances and fire truck stopped next door with sirens going..I tripped on the vacuum..so it is not only outside but inside to be careful ! I almost went down the stairway head first.

I've had two close calls this summer, one was from "momentarily" leaving the vacuum cleaner in the dark hallway and then nearly cracking my head open when I forgot it was there and tripped over it, falling head first into the linen closet door.
Then a few days ago I was hurrying down the cellar stairs and stubbed my toe. It was a miracle that it happened to be one of the few times I was actually HANGING ON the railing.
Part of the lesson I learned is to SLOW DOWN!!!!!

Oh, please. I actually did the whole cartoon stepping-on-a-rake thing this summer. Johnny nearly turned blue he was laughing so hard. And feel free to recall my near death experiences just trying to help build the chicken coop. (Post hole diggers, staple guns, etc.)

I wear my big floppy hat while I'm in the yard, because I get blinded by the sun fairly easily and I tend to misplace prescription sunglasses. Like in compost piles, in pots, etc. Big straw hats are much easier to find.

I saw a bumblebee this week, the first I've seen in nearly two months. I've had just a few honeybees, so I can understand the excitement.

I'm glad you weren't hurt worse. And the Bride was sort of a looker. Yowza!

Oh Caroline, my spelling is atrocious. It seems the only words I seem to get right and use in their right order are to, too and two. I do preview my posts, then as I hit send the light bulb comes on and I'm say Oh $%#!, LOL. So glad you didn't take a header down the stairs, you are very lucky, you could have really hurt yourself.

Patti, Ouch, falling head first into a door must have really smarted. Be careful, things seem to happen in threes, we've had our three. The day before I took a header DH, tripped on the cellar stairs and took a chunk out of his arm. Our remaining inside kitty Breeze, she's 15, that night either had a stroke or a seizure, she was dragging a foot for awhile but snapped out of it and seems to be O.K. now. Then the next day I did my thing. SLOW DOWN, maybe I should hang that sign right under WATCH WHERE YOU PUT YOUR FEET STUPID. Our cellar stairs are concrete, no railings, is that stupid, or is that stupid, must get that remedied immediately.

I go back to the doctor tomorrow for a show and tell, I won't get my own doctor but will get the one that stitched me up. Must go look for my pair of oversized sunglasses, the swelling on my face is starting to go but all around my eyes are beet red and now look like a demon from the Exorcist. Thank goodness the doctor warned me what I was going to look like for a few days or I would have frightened myself to death when I looked in the mirror.
We are very fortunate to have an urgent care clinic handy and don't have to go to the emergency ward at the hospital where you have to sit and wait for hours. Take care everyone.

Oh Annette ~ I am so sorry to hear what happened to you. It is awful getting older because we just aren't who we used to be physically. I have had to slow way down, DH also. I'm now 58, but just after I turned 50 I slipped off a step landed first on my right ankle to the outside, and then landed on my left ankle doing the exact same thing, and finally landed on my behind. DH was out back, I was up front and I had to wait for traffic to go by and holler to him in between. At first he said he though it was kids hollering, then he realized it was me and he came running fast. He took my shoes off and gently rotated my feet and nothing seemed broken, just horribly sprained. He helped me hobble inside and we put ice on and kept feet elevated. Having to use crutches was awful. I cried trying to keep my balance and not hurt myself further, it was excruciating. My right ankle was the worst and still bothers me to this day. That little lesson taught me to move much slower, not be in such a dang hurry. Just a week or so ago I was out triming some stuff and got a drop of sap or something in my left eye and it burned and watered all day. The next day it was fine. I've had other little mishaps while gardening too, and it just takes the steam and fun right out of what I was just doing. After recieving a broken arm and damaged shoulder in a car accident, I can't do as much as I used to and am having to learn to ask DH more for help. I also try to take more breaks and try to enjoy doing things as I get them done. It may not be as quickly as I would like, but what the heck. At this age we don't need to be laid up.

Oh, Annette, you poor thing. That sounds incredibly painful! I hope they didn't also have to pick gravel out of your wounds. I've found myself in that situation a couple times in my life and it was NOT fun.

I too have learned to slow down a lot. My balance is horribly out of wack and I often find myself heading off in a direction other than I was attempting to go. It can be so embarrassing at times. I also trip and just fall down for no good reason at times. So far I've been lucky and haven't injured myself in any way. Hopefully my luck will remain with me on that score! Take good care of yourself. I hope you heal up well.

PS...Mozilla has added spell check to their browser. It works on every site you are at so I always get a heads up to my spelling errors. Funny...I used to consider myself a good speller but I can see now that I'm just average. At least someone is watching out for my errors because I would probably never catch them.

So sorry to hear about your accident. I grimaced when I read your description of what happened...OUCH. I bet your eyes look like you were beaten with a bat. Just what you need...a new facial scar, right? Hope your checkup visit went well and they gave you a sucker or a balloon cause you were such a good girl :-)

About 2 years ago I was cutting a vine from my arched trellis. I was cutting WAY too fast and instead of looking at what I was doing I was looking for the next portion of vine I could cut. I somehow managed to cut my little finger on my right hand (I'm left handed). When I did it I knew it was bad but I was afraid to look. I immediately grabbed my right fingers with my left hand and put as much pressure on my little finger as I could as I made a dash for the house.

I yelled for DH and put my hand under cold running water. I made DH look at my finger before I did, I was really scared to see what I had done. DH said "you have cut part of your finger off." We jumped in the car and headed for the closest urgent care.

I'll never forget what it felt like when they made me put my finger in a cup of iodine mixed with some other concoction from hell. Wow Wee....I saw stars.

Anyway, turned out I had sliced a small piece of the tip of my little finger off. They couldn't put in stiches and said it would heal okay on its own.

It's fine today, however, I now have a funny slant to the end of that finger and I'm the proud owner of an up to date tetanus shot.

When I got home I found the pruners and the piece of my finger was still on the blade, yuck... ya'll probably didn't want to read that.

Lesson learned: Always wear gloves when pruning anything and slow down!!!

Gardening mishaps can absolutely be dangerous! Oh Annette, I'm so glad you weren't hurt worse than you were. Even so, I hate to think of you all banged up like that! I hope you are on the mend and will immediately go buy yourself a good pair of sunglasses. Put 'em on one of those chain thingies around your neck. Who cares if you'll look like you're ready to play Canasta.

I can't begin to tell you how many mishaps I've had in the garden. One of the worst was when a landscaper across the way covered up a bee hive. I was so upset, poor bee's trying to save their fellows. I marched right over and tried my best to uncover the hole. One of the little buggers nailed me. I was in shock as I had never been stung before. I had a panic attack and then I passed out.

FlowerLady, I know the pain you must have had to deal with two sprained ankles, sprains are worse than broken bones as far as the healing goes. Some years ago I broke my right ankle, I ended up with metal plates a couple of bolts and a few screws. I sprained my left ankle and it took longer to heal and for the pain to go away.

MeMo, actually there wasn't much pain, my forehead was very ouchy if I touched it though, I just looked like hell and still do to some extent. Although you and I are dealing with different problems we seem to have some of the same issues, tripping, balance and so on. Girl you are an inspiration to me, the amount you have accomplished is mind boggling. You are one amazing lady. MeMo I have spellcheck, now if I'd only LOOK. It's my grammar, that's what really bugs me, because I do know the difference you know, things like by&buy, stationary& stationery, passed &past etc. It doesn't look like I'm ever going to improve in that department so bare I mean bear with me LOL.

Vikki, I feel like we are kindred spirits, I'm left handed too, I cut the tip of my little finger of my right hand off as well. I was so proud of myself, I had just butterflied (sp) a 12 lb. turkey and it was in the oven, I started slicing carrots and, you guessed it. The neighbor drove me up to the emergency ward and the doctor stuck the tip of my finger back on, while he was bandaging me up he asked me how I did mine, he said he did his on his table saw. Seems to be quite a common accident. That one was very, very, painful as you well know.

Edna, bee stings are terribly painful DH is allergic so has to be very careful. Bye the way, we've got honey bees they started arriving shortly after the michaelmas daisies started to bloom, today the daisies are covered with them, where they have been all summer is a mystery, they weren't in my garden.

I went to the doctor on thursday for a checkup, he seemed pleased with the progress. As it was a head injury he asked if I could remember the whole incident, I said I could and wished I didn't, he asked if I felt confused after it happened, I said no more than usual, this brought a smile to his face. I go back on monday to have the stitches removed.
DH wanted to take me out for dinner tonight as it was my birthday, so I slapped on some makeup, put a band-aid on my nose, put my glasses back on and went out to our favorite restaurant, once there we slid into a booth and I tried to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. We had a wonderful meal and I have to say after two Bellini cocktails I didn't much care if anyone stared or not, fill your boots I say.
Steven, I read somewhere else that you had a bit of a health scare and were waiting for results of some tests, thank goodness the news was good. Waiting for results is so nerve wracking.

Slubb.... I haven't done the rake thing yet, but I hope to be around for a few more years, time will tell, Ouch that must have smarted.
