I don't think it's E. ingens, Kris. Not that I know much about Euphorbs, but isn't there one called E. trigona?

This is E. trigona. I bought one over 30 years ago when living in Houston, hauled it with me to CT and NY, and it just kept growing and branching until it was over 6 feet tall in an 8 inch clay pot. Talk about top-heavy and hard to handle. I finally tossed it and moved on. There is also a newer variety with red pigmentation overlaid on the green.

Definitely not E. trigona. I have a 4' one of those, and it is much more columnar, not as fat or uneven in width, and the leaves are rounder.

This plant is stouter, thicker stemmed, and the branches are different, with narrower leaves. And as I said, the larger plant is reverting to being 4 sided, and the spines are larger than on E. trigona...

Anyone else have any ideas?

I like your ingens identification, but another with similar characteristics is E. abyssinica.

It's in Group O1 at Frank Vincenze great Euphorbia.de web site. O1 includes abyssinica, ammak, trigona, and lots of other potential candidates. E. abyssinica is the only one I could find that has the variegation, four or more angles, and the long leaves on new growth.

Ingens seems like the best guess to me, but abyssinica is certainly possible.

I guess until I hear any more feedback to the contrary, I'll have to go with ingens. I have checked out Frank's Euphorbia site several times. A lot of useful information there, but not always a lot of photos for an individual species, to nail down a positive ID.
