I think it would be safe to put it in more sunlight. When I had the one , a different one than this, I kept it on my deck in full, constant sun. That was the one that flowered for me. It was so thick and bushy it actually provided shade for some other palnts. The one thing I do to my AF now is water it with water I cook my veggies in. I don't use salt in the water and I dilute it w/fresh water. It kinda smells for a day but only if you're right next to the plant. I haven't tried it w/any of my other plants, don't know why just haven't. Next spring I am gonaa try a small one and keep it outside all summer, but I don't want to risk harming this one. Maybe I will put the divided one out this summer. ??

I am guessing they are Ostrich ferns. Of the several variety I grow they are the travelers. Look for small crowns that have a leaf or two coming up only an inch or two. Dig with a shovel or trowel the depth of the shovel next to the crown and scoop them out root and all. If they are in grass you will want to brush the grass from the roots. Then bury them at the same depth they were. Water daily for a week. You should be good to go. You MAY get a larger crown, leaf combo to survive but it is not as easy. WATER WATER WATER is the key. In some areas if they die off this year a new fern may come up from the root next year. That will depend on soil type and drainage. Again the younger and earlier in the season you try the more success you will have. Let us know. If they are not brown in a week or two after transplanting you did it!

I have done it, and am not sure it is worth the trouble. The roots are very dense and you need somthing very sharp and powerful to separate them. Most of the roots and old stalks are dead and are very hard to cut through. You can try it. What happened to me is that I had to abuse the plant so much to get it separated that I only had a few good stalks left. After a few months, it was a full plant again.

I find they're quite easy to deal with. If you expose the rhizomes just cut them leaving enough roots on each piece. They're very forgiving provided you don't stress them with too much direct sun and lack of water. Those rhizomes allow (for a fern) a bit of drought tolerance. In my garden I have several different types but one looks identical to yours. It flourishes in the wet season but completely dries out and loses all its fronds for about 4 months during the dry season. When the wet season returns it comes back with a vengeance. They are tough.
