When DH and I were coming driving home from town on saturday afternoon I asked him to stop at the feed store so I could buy another bale of Sunshine Mix No.4, I'm right in the middle of redoing some beds. As our tomatoes are doing so well in this mix in a new raised planter I want to change the soil over to this in a couple more in ready for next year.

The SPCA van was parked outside of the feed store they happened to be holding an adoption clinic there that very afternoon.

I tried not to look at the kitties (who am I kidding) as I went to pay for my bale of mix, out of the corner of my eye I saw this poor little waif sitting looking forlorn in her cage. She was so thin and sad looking, the lady said she was very timid and hid under whatever she could get under at the shelter so they had to put her in a cage for herself.

I pushed my fingers into her cage and she very timidly rubbed her neck against them. There were several other very cute kitties there hoping to find their forever homes, one little black girl in particular was so outgoing and friendly I'm sure by the end of the day would have been adopted. BUT... there was something about this little girl that pulled at me, suddenly I realized it was she was so like our Dusty that we lost to cancer 2 years ago, the resemblance is what attracted her to me I guess, she wasn't the cutest kitty there by all means but then either was Dusty when she was tiny, DH even had to admit to the resemblance. Needless to say Sunshine N.4 mix isn't the only thing that came home with me.

This poor little thing was just skin and bone but she's eating well now, since saturday her coat has changed from dull to soft and shiny, right now she's living in the room where I have my computer, I don't think she has stopped purring since I brought her home and her shyness is starting to go away. She even demanded I pick her up while I was sitting at the computer early this morning. She's still making strange with Heidi our Cairn but before long they'll be bossing each other around.

Basil, that's going to take a little more work but I'm sure in the end we'll conquer that too. I hope to be able to get back to my garden projects this afternoon, you know the one's I had planned on doing on saturday.

So meet "Percy" the new addition to our family, she's 2 years old, adopted almost 2 years to the day we lost Dusty to cancer.

I think she is a cutie!! And she looks quite a bit like Bippy with her reddish fur.
All it takes is a little love and kindness, doesn't it, to see the changes.
Bippie isn't shy (by any means) but she is not as rough with the others as she was. She's actually a chubblet now, and has bonded to Chester very nicely. I hope Percy continues to do well for you, and thrive in your family. Congrats on your new kitty!!!

I've never seen a vining bougainvillea. I've seen them grown as hanging baskets but never had one. These were large shrubs. Actually, there isn't anything for a vine to grow on. This bed is about 10 feet away from the nearest fence. I'll have to google Smoke Tree as I'm not familiar with that either. I have salvia along the fence line. A lot of it. I put it there because of the deer eating anything else I planted there. It also draws hummers, butterflies and honey bees. The deer won't come over the fence as it's deerproof and the dogs bark and keep them away. They will eat through the fence though. I think I've just about decided on Esperanza and will see what they have when I get to the nursery. (I always start out to get one thing and end up with something else) I do want to keep the blooms in the white to yellow range. The bougainvillea's were white and the rest of the plants I chose were complimentary to white but not as large. I have 6 mountain laurel I started from seed last year. These will form the "backbone" of my boomerang eventually. They are extremely slow growing. Thanks for the help. You really got me thinking in another direction.

I would think it's fine if it's be thawing in the fridge and the door hasn't been opened. It was frozen when you put it in there, right? It probably would have taken about 3 days to thaw (mine NEVER thaw in the amount of time stated on the packaging, anyway). I think if it's cold and not soft/mushy, it will be fine if cooked properly. I would have used it as soon as the elec came back or the barbecue was fired up!

My husband's prognosis will depend on our next scans, I suppose. A spot was found on his brain during his last MRI, so we're waiting to scan again to see if chemo affects the spot. Hopefully, the spot will remain the same as chemo shrinks cancer cells. Sounds like the lung cancer has been controlled? I will think good thoughts for his next scan. If you have any diagnosis, you might also look to see if there are clinical trials going on. I can't say enough good things about them, they gave my dad a few more months when it was looking very bleak. My son has an uncle that specializes in cancer drugs, he told me about the clinical trial site and gave me info about which doctor had better results. Unfortunately, I learned this all too late. Depending on how limited your time is now will really dictate what you'll realistically be able to do and not do to get ready for sale. The last thing you need is more stress. I used to drop my dad off for blood tests / transfusions, then go to his old house to work. I was pretty much on my own except for when my hubby could help me, so unless you have family that can help; take the time to make a realistic list of what to do with your time. If he regularly goes to the hospital, bring a phone book with you, it will allow you to look for painters to get a few estimates. Figure out what rooms you would take photos of when you list it, then have those rooms painted / staged if you can manage it. Also look at handymen. We ended up using one to paint, he saved us a lot of money. My dad put the money out for paint, so the cost was mostly in the labor. I may just e-mail you one day, though. Thanks again. Your welcome. So far I haven't found a forum strictly for cancer patients / loved ones; although it is much needed. Hospitals usually have support groups, but who really has time for that?

Since my DH's first wife died in October 2003, through our marriage in 2006 and even today, DH has piddled with getting rid of his stash of tools up north. Now he is getting down to business, and has made inroads--because I told him I was through waiting on him to get his house ready to sell, and I would NOT go up there any more. So I am surprised and mostly pleased by his activity in that direction. He is an engineer with a tool for every purpose. He also confiscated my PERSONAL tools here in Mobile, and I found them among his out in his garden shed. THAT was a nono, and I started bringing them back. Some of those I kept in a Snoopy yellow plastic lunch box for 30 years, and I depend on them being available quickly when I need a screwdriver or a Vicegrip or a small drill bit. I miss the Snoopy tool box. I think his first wife must have left all tool-associated chores to him, and he does not quite know how to deal with my very independent take-hold do-it-myself history. Heck, when I tore out the bathroom, he should have known I did not wait for anyone to do what I could do for myself! Southern woman I am, but not the helpless variety. More like Steel Magnolia! (one of my favorite movies) So pleased that MamaGoose is on board these days, and Jay, and now that the fall is almost upon us again, maybe there will be a surge of activity on the forum. I really look forward to catching up with what's been going on while I was out gardening for about 4 months. Sometimes we all need to take a break to come back refreshed.

I have a friend that is psychic. She is especially so with cats.

One day she came in and said, "Squeeky told me to tell you she needs to go to the vet". So I did and she was sick.
She has had several cats over the years that she swears are her former pets.
Normally, I would be a skeptic, but I have known her for 26 years.

Twice my parents bought black toy poodles that turned out to be big miniatures. Mother always wanted a toy.

Diane has a pom (Cody. If Diane was standing on hot coals, he would be right there with her.

When we got BeBe I kept him in a crate in my bedroom. One day Diane was cleaning my bathroom and said, look at Cody.
He would not go in my room and the hair was standing up on his back. This went on all day, as she kept testing him.
I called Beth and told her what was going on. She said it was Mother and she was mad at me because I had gotten a black toy poodle.
I kid you not. I walked into the room and said, "Mother what ever you are mad about, you need to go on."
Then Cody walked into my room like nothing had happened.

I am glad Diane was there also. Otherwise if I told that story someone would call the men with butterfly nets. LOL!

Hurrah Annette! The frisky, friendly kittens will undoubtedly find a home. Percy needed you to appreciate her shy qualities when she's a bit beyond the kitten stage.

I agreed to foster Iena for 2 months while her human Mom had knee surgery. That was March 2008. Iena's still here, officially adopted. Checking up on her vaccination history: Turns out Iena's 14 years old.

What is it they say about best-laid plans? I think it continues "of mice and men." Thank goodness cats help us humans with the mice.

Kathy, I love that story about your Mother! DH asked me recently if I believed in that 'stuff'. I told him I thought anything was possible with the human mind. It is eerie, but somehow comforting.

Kathy, very eerie indeed BUT you never know. I've had a couple of eerie things happen in my life so I don't scoff at mysterious happenings.

Thanks all for looking at our new little cutie, she had a bit of a rough night tuesday, hairballs, spitting up and then finally another hairball so guess who was up with her most of the night. She slept all of wednesday but ate a good supper and last night was uneventful. Today after a rambunctious start racing around the coffee table she decided to play it cool and slept a good deal only getting up once or twice to tell Heidi to get the H. out of her room in no uncertain terms. She goes for her Vet check tomorrow, fingers crossed all goes well.

All is well with the world, Percy had her vet check this afternoon, she was really good while she had her rabies and leukemia shots.
The vet said she was healthy, big relief after the other night. She also gave her a couple of kitty treats which Percy gobbled up and looked for more, this kind of surprised me but then she isn't the frightened little kitty we brought home on saturday.
She also came home with a free kitty kit which included a tooth brush, a brush for her coat, some advantage to control fleas and a kitty toy which she is right now molesting with gusto :o). I guess I can now relax and just enjoy her.

She is beautiful, Annette. What a lucky girl to be able to have you for a Mom! So glad she has been officially declared healthy, too. You will have such fun getting to know one another.

What a beauty, Annette! A kitten is a very good thing! Ozzy about 2 as well, and a bundle of cuddle and purr!! I need to find a local source for those 'bales'. I need to renovate some beds, hopefully before Fall, though it feels very 'Fallish' today!! Brrrr.
