How to I transplant these pads?

I finally got a pad from a neighbor's plant(it got weed-wacked), and it started growing more pads just sitting on the porch.

How do I plant the new pads? Vertically, horizontally? How much dirt over them, do I keep them attached to the old pad, etc? I have looked online but it seems everyone has a different method, so I am confused.

This is an older photo about a week after I got it. There are many more little pads now.

Nature's provided you with a base and support - just cover the flattened base pads with about 1/2" of soil and away they'll go in the spring, although there will be some growth year-around if the weather is warmish and there's some water and sun. Opuntias (the genus of cactus you have) have species that grow from the Peace River in northern British Columbia all the way down the Americas to Tierra del Fuego - they're easily one of the most opportunistic, as your picture aptly shows, members of the Cactus Family.

Or don't cover it with dirt - your Opuntia will grow anyway, just not as quickly / lushly as that of one planted.

Much appreciated, cactusmcharris. It's very true, just keeping this little guy in a small amount of water in a bowl has kept it thriving.

A related question, what kind of gloves are best for transplanting cacti?

We are getting our 20 year old hardwoods refinished right now because they are trashed! Here are the "really" bad things we've noticed. Do not push your furniture across the floor! It will leave gouges. Buy tons of felt protective pads in all different sizes and put them on EVERYTHING. You also need to replace them frequently and keep the pads clean (if there is any grit or dirt on the pad the protective pad turns to sandpaper). Put an area rug under the sink/DW and water dispenser to catch drips (and shake and clean under rugs regulary so no dirt is trapped under them). Our kids have plasma cars and they have destroyed the floors so I would say no wheels at all on the floor. Don't push that piano! Swiffers or dust mops are great and help keeping it clean.

I had seen that before and loved many of those tips. UNFORTUNATELY, since I downloaded the new iOS 7 yesterday, it's all different. And I'm not happy about it at all. Maybe I'm too old for change. Silly me...I even took some stuff off my iPhone 4 to make room for the new operating system. I should have follwed my instincts and waited.

For plants with half that size pot 3-4 gallon) I just open my hand so a few fingers straddle the stem on the soil surface and just invert the pot and pop the root ball out resting on my hand with the plant upside down. I'm very confident that this plant will not just survive but it will grow very well in the soil providing you can protect it from any cooler weather. Steve, I have been using the double strength Miracle Grow for many years. I purchase it in the large 15 lb. boxes and add 1 1/4 lb to 40 gallons water every time I plant any vegetables with my water-wheel planter. Transplants always need that boost to begin the transition to cooler soil. I guess I should state that their recommended level is one tablespoon per gallon water so just use 2. Don't go overboard.

Here's a few more ideas and thoughts. Since you have a deck on the other side of the house (in 3rd photo) and generous land around you, I'm guessing this is not your main entertainment area. I agree with Yardvaark about the plantings. IN the quick sketch attached, I just cut away some of the excessive concrete and extended the bed, but (hopefully) left room to back the car into (or for the table in chairs if they need to remain). Also added a columnar evergreen on the corner to soften it. For the deck, I change the railings to metals railings for a lighter look for the deck, added screening below the deck, and added a color to the front door. The planters are larger and more of them to fill the corner. For the bare wall, there is a lot of art that is made for the outdoors these days. Pick something you love to use as a focal point. You can also add vertical house numbers, like comelyhomely suggested next to the door. Good luck with your project!

Opuntias, as well as having spines, have glochids, which aren't particularly painful, but they're intensely irritating and numerous. Any pair of gloves that I've used to move Opuntias got the glochids stuck in them, rendering them full of nearly-invisible stickers, and I usually throw them away.....so what I'm saying is use sheets of newspaper or the like, and fold them so you can grasp the pad indirectly with a strap of newspaper. Old carpet also works.

when it comes to Opuntias, I recommend NOT using gloves- false sense of security. As recommended above, paper or carpet work great, as do cotton sheets, blankets, etc. Nothing more frustrating than using gloves, then picking them a few weeks later and getting all t he glochids that were adhered to the gloves in your skin. Best just to not touch Opuntias with any gloves you ever plan to use again (Home depot has $1.50 gloves, so if I DO happen to screw up and get them covered with glochids, in the trash they go).

Yes, the gloves I used did get the glochids stuck in then, and I got stuck anyway. Thank you all for the suggestions! I have a set of tongs I think would be perfect for this.
