Well, this was my first year receiving brug cuttings. They were already rooted this spring and progressed nicely into some real beauties.

Being so new at this, I was scared to offer cuttings as I didn't want to screw anything up by cutting them too short or too much green, etc. So, what I did was take all the cuttings and put them in water in my basement with a little rooting hormone in it, thinking maybe a few would survive and I still had all my originals in their huge pots in the basement.

They all rooted very well and I now have 60 brugs potted up and still have about 30 to go. What the hell am I gonna do with all these if they survive the next couple of months?? What was I thinking?? Any advice on where to go from here?

Maybe a sign out the front of your house and sell them for a few dollars each? Even at $2.00 each that is quite a bit of Ebay money....good luck.

Well - you can give them away to neighbors and friends.

Quite a few of the ones I have received have found wonderful homes with people. I now have a request from a few more people at work - but of course, they want ME to babysit them over the winter. (grin)

I've already given away 25 cuttings in batches of mixed colors to people. Another 10 or 15 will be going.

You'd be surprised how many people are interested once they see a picture.

There probable isn't mistake I haven't made---and made--and made!! When I make the same one more then once on the same piece I turn off the sewing machine and go do something else. I am making the blocks for "Sylvia's Bridal Quilt" and I don't think I have more then a couple that I haven't ripped out at least once. Not a good time. Fortunately, perfection isn't necessarily one of my big requirements. Jayne

Quartzite slab has massive crack...any experiences with this?

Check out the end of Bee's thread on her new Super White for some of my own questions about cracks in quartzite. I recently put in some Super White of my own and had some subtle cracks that the fabricator swears are part of the stone and can happen easier with quartzite and some marbles. If its noticed before the fabrication I'd imagine you'd want to avoid it, but I'm no expert in that area. Is it really a crack you can feel or is it just a vein running against the normal flow of the slab? As far as honed vs polished. I strongly recommend getting a chunk of your slab cut off and have a piece of it honed and part of it polished. That really helped us decide and actually changed our minds after we saw it side by side. For us, we felt Honed would resist/hide the subtle etching more but might stain a bit more. On the other hand, polished will show etching easier, but is supposedly more resistant to staining since the sealant can create a more impenetrable surface. To the best of my knowledge those statements are true, but your experience may vary. If your stone is one that never etches then honed doesn't have as much as a negative. In our slab there are some clear-ish portions that really became cloudy with the honed look but are stunning in the polished finish. That really swayed us towards polished.

The handle on the DW does not look out of place- it looks like a bar - 13 inches long. So it isn't pretending to be a handle- but an appliance pull. I found it better to consider my DW an appliance with a panel rather than to try to make it look like a cabinet door. The panel makes it blend in with the cabinets visually. The bar is handy and I can hang a nice towel on it to dry my hands after using the sink. I would advise anyone to do this. As far as painting the knobs- I will expect my painter to do this. They did some carpentry (which they still haven't completed!) and have to do some touch-ups. The same painter is doing repairs and replacing my front porch (20 years old) and painting the exterior of my house. They are working slow as molasses and you can be sure they will not get paid until the knobs are painted. This is a long tale of woe, but not for this thread.

Tiskers, Sounds like you're doing the same extensive DIY that we did/are still doing! I have one question --- if hubby is that handy, why aren't you installing the cabinets yourselves? WE saved $2000 doing that. That was the easiest $2K we saved on the whole reno. Mind you, my DH is an engineer (electrical- so he did all the re-wiring and new wiring), and really really good at drawings and figuring things out. One day (perhaps when it's all done), I will sit down and figure out how much we have saved DIY. WE gutted a 25 X 10.5 space- including removing ceiling (which wasn't pleasant as it was an older house with no vapour barrier)- bits of insulation were 'everywhere'! We tore down a wall (that was fun)- removed aluminum wiring- rerouted plumbing/venting re-wired/installed all new electrical/appliances. Changed windows- now, that was an area that I subbed out, ie manufacturing and installation of new windows. That delayed us by quite a bit- they were more than 2 months late, as we had to take out old windows to reframe- we did it to be ready for scheduled delivery... and we ended up living with plastic sheeting for windows for months! Check your timelines. We had to have drywall up and painted for a set period of time (forget exactly), so that it could all dry before cabinets went in. Since we weren't drywalling until windows were in, we got behind right from the start. Luckily our cabinet supplier had room to hold the cabinets for us until we were ready. Flooring was also subbed out, and when we missed our original time, had to wait awhile until he could reschedule. Appliance store also agreed to hold appliances for us for several months. We originally planned a July 30th finish date. With delays, we then hoped to be in before Christmas. Granite was finally installed end of November- had to be re-ordered, and replacement pieces weren't installed until April 08, so of course we couldn't put up backsplash or finish off back of peninsula. Not to belabour the point, but as of Nov 24 08, we are still waiting for the last pieces we subbed out to a carpenter- finishing off our cabinets (original order was screwed up- long story). Hired him in August, and supposedly will get our order this week (not holding my breath). As I've said here before, my mistake in saying we wanted to be finished before Christmas, was in not specifying the year!!! So, advice? Money to be saved is real. In these times, priceless. Luckily, your DH can do all the work. If you don't have to sub out to anyone for anything, you're ahead of the game. But, if you have to depend on anyone else, be prepared for delays, and make sure your suppliers are OK with them.

Give them to friends and neighbors. You could also offer some for trade on the plant exchange forum.

I like Oxmyk's idea. Who would want grass when they could have a yard full of brugs. What kind of rooting hormone did you use and how much of it?

Someone on one of the other forums had a 'clearance' sale on thier brugs and leftover fall plants. They charged a dollar a brug cutting and various prices for the other plants. They had the people who were ordering the plants/cuttings pay via paypal for shipping and what they ordered. It was a really good deal.

JoyceAnn, my dear friend I didn't know you grew brugs. I would have gladly taken a couple of them off your hands. I saw my first one October 6th this year and of course it was love at first sight. Got to love those HUGE BLOOOMS. Plant some of them in with your daylilies. LOL

I'm sure from looking at all those photos of your plants that you don't have room for that many brugs. There is a house here in East Texas that has them planted out in the full sun all the way around the fence. It was beautiful when they were blooming. I was surprised when I drove back by to see them again. About a week later they didn't have a bloom on them.

Which ones do you have? I might need you to save me a couple of your cuttings. I've been trying to decide what to send you for Christmas. Considering I never got Halloween pictures I was thinking of switches and some coal. LOL

Joyceann, your name sounded familiar so since Marian mentioned it maybe I've seen you over on the daylily forum. I'm a daylily addict too and I'll tell you, brugs are beautiful planted as a backdrop for them. Plus, just about the time the big show is over with the daylilies, the brugs start doing their big flushes so the lack of daylily blooms isn't as noticeable anymore! So you're going to have about 90 rooted brugs huh? Trading is good. Ebay is a thought depending on what you have. Most people want doubles these days... If they aren't named then you would never come out making a profit. Hard to make money there. I do the same thing as you with rooting cuttings from mine and it's usully pretty easy to give 'em away during the spring.

Hi all!
Sorry I didn't get to join in on the conversations earlier today-had to work :(

The rooting hormone I used was some Walmart cheapie that has been under my sink for 2 years. Must have worked though!

My problem is that my friends don't really care much for plants. Especially plants that have to be brought in over the winter. I don't think I have one single friend with a basement.

Now, another question, since these are already growing in pots, can they be removed and shipped bare root this spring? Is that safe to do? If so, I will have plenty to send out. If not, this Illinois weather isn't the greatest for setting around brugs. They may like full sun, but the 95-100 degree days we got were rough on them, so I kept having to move them. If I can send these out safely in the spring, I think that would be my best bet and learn my lesson for next year!

Welcome to the forum. Bruggers are the nicest on GW, IMHO.
Yes, you can ship them in the spring, just wash the roots, and make sure you keep them a bit moist when shipping.
I've even received a coupla large rooted cuttings where the roots had been cut back a bit and all was just fine.

My husband asked me the same question. What are you going to do with all these, lol. I have family that want some and plenty of friends but of course they all want them in the spring, lol. I plan to keep one of everything and share the rest. I will have them in pots and in the ground all over the place, lol. You can plant some castor bean to grow behind them for shade. If you all have too many daylillies keep me in mind. I don't have any yet. Glad you came to the forum Joyceann and hope to hear from you often.

Wouldn't it be great if we only had to plant our
brugs, never worry about taking them in, or, even
taking cuttings for that matter. I grew more cutings
than I could take care of this year and was quite
successful in selling the extras.
Keep those babies growing, Joyceann...you won't have
a problem getting rid of them.

I had them in Nor CA - I never knew how good I had it when I didn't have to lift them. (grin)

I was appauled when I got back - and found out you had to lift gladiola bulbs in Illinois. LOL I said well that explains why they didn't come back the next year. (grin)

Give the spares away. If someone only wants it for the season - so be it. They enjoyed it - it gave them a smile for the season - and that alone is worth it.
