incredible weather...

We started at 4AM Sat. with the rain and wind. Trees are falling due to the drought stress now that the ground is getting saturated. The power has been out 1x so far this PM and DH has had to let the pool down 2x so far. They are predicting more of this and worse through Tues. Wed is due sunshine.

I am still up after getting home from work at 11PM as the wind is so loud and the house is shaking and I think I will keep watch a while. Till later...c

The fright and the worry are much worse than the inconvenience. I hope your rain and wind stop soon, Caroline. A tornado formed eight miles from here last week. Thank goodness it didn't head it the direction of my house. It went south and I live east. The golf ball size hail did major damage! One lady I know had every window in her home broken, her cars are covered with dents, and the roof of her garage collapsed. She used the garage for storage, so she lost a lot of memorabilia. She said every tree in the neighborhood was striped of branches.

The sirens were going off as I posted my note. The rain was really heavy but has stopped now. We got about 4 more inches after I posted. So it looks like we got about 10 -11 inches altogether from 4AM sat to 6AM sun. We have no damage and I am glad of that. One of our local churches has a 100 year old oak in the church this AM ! We were very lucky.

Looks like powdery mildew. THis happened to a few things in june due to the same reasons as down there. You can use a fungicide, or use an organic spray, which turns the leaf surface alkaline, in which the fungus usually cant go in. IT can also be a sign of bad airflow. This usually happens in plants that are too close together, and or not trimmed properlly. Yes, it happens after you get a hard rain, in which it stays damp for a few days. Certain plants seem to get it all the time, like caregana and lilac.

We're about to have 5 days straight of 95+ with 100 degrees by Tuesday and NO RAIN. My cottage pinks are done in--nearly all clumps are brown and fried. The pinks have edged one path in my cottage garden since when we built the house in 2005. A few purple heuchera that have done well for years are also crispy and the creeping jenny (gold) around them is definitely fried. It's all that I can do to keep the daylilies going. The foliage is looking really bad now.

Jo, I never would frown upon your use of Bt or Neem., and would, in fact, defend your right to use them and your decision to use them. Both Bt and neem are useful products and I have used them in the past and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future if I thought I needed them. Instead, though, I focus on encouraging beneficial insects and let the beneficial insects take care of the pest insects. It is a harder process because it calls for a lot more patience, and I don't always have that much patience, but it is more in keeping with the kind of sustainable gardening I'm attempting to do. I do use some pesticides selectively. For example, I couldn't garden without Slug-Go Plus because it controls the pill bugs and sow bugs that inhabit my mulched beds by the millions. It doesn't completely wipe them out, but it keeps their levels low enough that they aren't devouring every seedling within 24 hours of me transplanting it into the garden, which is the issue I had with them in the past. I also wouldn't want to garden without spinosad for a few selected applications, including as an organic fire ant killer. Nosema locuste is a pretty good control for the younger instars of grasshoppers, although it has less effect on the thousands of migrants who fly in from elsewhere later in the summer. I just don't have a tomato hornworm problem here. If I did, I'd spray the plants with Bt. Even with 140 or 150 tomato plants, I probably don't see more than 8 or 10 tomato hornworms total in any growing season, and some years I see none. I believe the beneficial parasitic wasps here control them. It took me a long time to wean myself off using lots of organic pesticides, but I did it because I wanted to move from organic gardening to sustainable gardening, and it is such a slow process. I've done it as a slow 'cutting back' type of process and not a 'cold turkey' one. Diane, With cow manure, the problems that arise are usually one of three issues: 1.) Herbicide contamination. Sadly, this is becoming a bigger issue every year instead of a smaller one. There are several very effective broadleaf herbicides sprayed on grass and grain crops that are very slow to break down (3 to 4 years) and can survive going through the cow's digestive tract and can survived being composted. Once your soil is contaminated with these, there is no remedy except to remove all the soil to quite a depth or to wait several years for the residue to break down enough. (However, you can grow grass or grain products in those areas.) I no longer use locally-raised hay unless I know the folks personally who raised it and they can assure me their pastures are not sprayed with Grazon and the other similar products that contain the herbicides in question. I've seen too many people lose their entire garden after years of growing successfully and it is not a risk I want to take. The thought of starting over with a new plot of land and spending a decade to get that soil into the same condition my garden soil is in now is just more than I can bear. You cannot escape the contamination issue in this country because these herbicide residues have been found in commercial, bagged compost and manure products that were made from hay, straw and grass/grain that was sprayed with these herbicides. 2) E. coli contamination. In limited cases, some leafy crops have been contaminated with E. coli from animal manure. You can avoid this by hot-composting your manure and by never spraying manure tea on leafy crops. If I use manure tea (and I've switched mostly to alfalfa tea because of the growth hormones in alfalfa) at all, I apply it to the ground and avoid getting it on the foliage. Several years ago, one of our neighbors' young cattle dogs died after rolling in cow manure. An autopsy later found he's had some sort of open wound in his back, and the vet surmised that E. coli entered through that open cut and infected the dog, eventually killing him. 3) Weed seeds. If you are using local manure given to you by a local rancher, be sure you hot-compost it and that it is fully decomposed before you use it. You need the heat to get high enough to kill the weed seeds or you'll never get rid of all the weeds that the manure brings into your garden. If you are using purchased, bagged manure, it usually has gone through the hot composting process and there will not be an issue with weed seeds. My compost piles always get hot enough in spring, summer and fall, but sometimes the winter piles cannot attain the heat level needed to kill weed seeds or E. coli and other undesirable pathogens, so when I build a fresh compost pile in winter, I don't add manure to it. If I have any cow manure at that point in time, I compost it separately and wait until it has heated up a lot in spring or summer before I use it for anything. People here (since we're surrounded by ranchers) offer me manure all the time, but I mostly turn it down since they all use conventional chemicals and I want to avoid those. Dawn

Weird, weird growing season

Tis' interesting that others in very different growing areas are having the same experience. My plants are huge, with little produce evolving. Finally had 3 tomatoes turn this week, there are dozens waiting, growing, but all green. And I just picked 3 cucumbers with no sign of more to come. Our weather dropped from high 90s (no rain) for a month to high 60s this week and downpours. I didn't check the low temps, usually drops 20 degrees at night. Even with the change, the garden had plenty of time to produce. With Sept. 2 weeks away and not unusual to see snow during the month, I just don't have a lot of hope for the garden. The norm would be to clear the garden mid Sept. Even my neighbor mentioned that half of the seeds she planted (flower/veggies) never grew, which was the same with me. We are not novices, lush gardens are the norm. What is up with all of this?

That is a heck of a lot of rain! I think I remember that you have a drain in your back yard. Did your yard flood, Caroline? What a shame that the mighty oak fell, and into a church no less. That seems rather ironic. I believe the ancient Druids worshipped oaks.

that's a lot of rain in a short time! I feel so bad for the folks in Florida, too. This is "just" a tropical storm...imagine a full blown hurricane.

We'll get some remnants later in the week, but shouldn't be anything like south of here.

Oh my, such terrible weather, wind, all that rain, trees coming down. It's raining and cool here but nothing compares with what you folks and folks in Florida are dealing with please stay safe.

We are fine and the rain was heavy but it was steady and we took the cover off of our drain and our neighbor's drain and had no flooding. We are in for more for the next couple days...look at the radar for the southeast...so we are prepared. Candles and everything. DD said it is just getting bad in Atlanta tonight. They were lucky yesterday though. She is in her car and the street lights just all went out...very scary,

I am crossing my fingers that the LA folks ( my family is there) don't get flooded. There are no gutters on the streets anymore so no place for the rain to go. Last rain had so much standing water in my nephews area that it took 8 hrs to recede. If they have another hurricane it will be dreadful.

Nope it has come back East again ! The tornado sirens are sounding now. It is supposed to stay all day and tomorrow and we are to get up to 6 or more inches of rain. This is crazy. c

DH mistakenly disabled the weather radio yesterday and turned off the alarm. I just discovered it.

The latest reports hold more trouble: the Flint River is scheduled to flood in town by Thursday morning. We are well away from the River and on high ground. TS 'Gustav' is forming in the Caribbean. Oh, please not another!

How very scary. I hope it soon over for all of you.
We had strong wind and rain yesterday. I was thinking this is like the start of a hurricane. It was nothing
compared to what y'all are going through.

I grew up in hurricane so I am very familiar with tropical storms.
I remember at about age 9 looking out the back window of Grandfather's car, watching the palm trees blow down.

Finally !! We had tornado sirens at 2:34 AM this morning. Now if you look at the map it is headed all up the East coast...Cameron and those in TN, NC ,SC and up.

Now we have possibly Gustav. Busy season so far. I am off to do yard clean up but we didn't get any damage so that is great!

I hope everyone in the path of Fay will be OK ! c

Caroline ~ So glad you did not have any damages or flooding. We and you and others did need rain, but come on, enough is enough already. The tornadoes are the really scary part to me, although, the whole thing is scary, winds and possible flooding or other damages. YIKES!

We checked Gustav again this morning and so far he's on the south side of Cuba and his track is westerly. Let's hope he stays that way.

The fear of these storms really gets to all of us who wait to see where they are headed and then sometimes have to go through them. All we can do is pray and hope for the best, and go with the flow.

I hope everyone survives these storms with minimal to no damages.

I'm so glad for you that you had no damage to your home and gardens, Carolyn. It is always so awful to see the aftermath of these storms. I can't imagine living through them on such a regular basis.

We had strong wind all day today. It blew the windrows all over the meadows today. There is nothing to stop it out here on the prairie. It just gets moving and then grows and grows, much like a tumble weed does. Sigh. Tomorrow...heavy rain storms are predicted.

We are due for a couple very nice days. My family is all in New Orleans and they have already been calling to see if they can come here if Gustav hits Louisiana. There is no question of course. The levees are not safe and the drains do nowhere. They were in poor condition before Katrina and are collapsed underground now so there is nowhere for the water to go. Sigh...and it is still August.

Good Grief!! Come February, I will be very envious of your balmy weather. Right now, I am happily ensconced in the 'Great White North'. Worst that could happen will be a little frost in the near future. I looked at Gustav's track - they will be emptying the oil rigs, if that isn't already done. It seems to be tracking right for New Orleans - I hope all are safe.
