Please Oh Please Diagnose My Ferns (Photos)

I have several ferns in a backyard that is facing NW, and under a tree, so it's quite shady. I water regularly. Lately my ferns (which are in their second year in my garden, and came up beautifully in spring) have pieces missing. I have eliminated the rabbits from my yard using Liquid Fence which repels them, and it really works, so I know it's not rabbits. I don't know whether it is something munching on the leaves, or some disease, or improper growing conditions (I had thought the conditions were really great for ferns) or improper soil. Can anyone help me? I love the ferns, and would hate to lose them.
