Is this chicken of the woods?

No it definitely is not. Hen of the woods is very feathery in appearance. This one is much too solid.

I'm not sure what you've got there, but I know it is not hen (chicken) of the woods.

Good mushroom experts are hard to find. I've been studying for years, and am not even close. Good luck in finding someone who can identify it. Usually it's tricky to identify just from viewing a photo. One has to check the spore print, spore color, gills, etc.

I thought it looked pretty similar to this one (link below) but now that you mention it, mine is not as feathery.

Hi, Quality could be OK, but to identify a mushroom you need at the very least a view of the lower side plus to these views. Is the lower side of the grayish-whitish ones formed of pores, like a fine sponge? Or is it in folds/gills, or maybe maze-like? They could be: Thick maze polypore; Thin maze polypore; Young specimens of green moss polypore; Or maaaaybe discolored turkey tail - I'm guessing not. The orange ones look like Picnoporus cinnabarinus to me. The bigger whitish one in the 2nd picture could be a Daedalea if the lower side matches. The ones with stems in the 3rd picture could be Polyporus squamosus if the lower side matches. Or decaying Armillaria mellea - honey mushroom, I think not though. Or are they your shiitake? I have never seen it growing, that might be it! The blackened ones behind them could be last year turkey tails. The brown ones in the last picture if they really have no stems (?) could be Ganoderma applanatum, but her lower side is very distinctive and there is a lot of flattish brown brackets similar to her. Generally speaking, you can't identify mushrooms from pictures. I am not bad with local ones in real life. Of course normally when you think you have the id it turns out that for a positive one you need to measure the spores or something...

Indentifying mushrooms takes time and a good field guide. Start with a spore print, leave the mushroom cap sitting on a piece of white paper for a day and then check the colour of the resulting spore. Your mushroom could be one of the amanitas, which are very poisonous or it could be one of the tasty ones. A good guide, with user friendly keys is the lone pine series book called Mushooms of Ontario. It includes most of the mushrooms found in eastern North America including Ohio. Thank you Vincent! Youve been a big help. I gave false info on that first mushroom. The pic of it on my camera was much brigher than it loaded on the computer. That first mushroom DOES NOT have craters. It has RIDGES. The protruding ridges have black on the ends. I did some research on it and im really not sure if its a Morchella elata or a Verpa (false morel). You are right about the second being an 'Inky Cap'. I looked it up and I think its a Coprinus micaceus. The scaly stump grower- I believe it is a Turkey Tail, Trametes versicolor. It is SO awesome! Thanks again! CMK

I do think you have a Laetiporus sulphureus. No two are alike. Let me do a google on the name and see what kind of variations we come up with. Then, you can decide.

As you can see, they are often very fleshy in the beginning.

Yeah, you have a Chicken of the Woods. Leatiporus sulphureus or cinncinatus. They are very similar. You can find good recipes online if you do a search.

Hen of the Woods are Grifola Frondosa. Easy to tell them apart. Hens are much tastier.

Are these pics from this year? Its quite early for them.

Call the hens by their japanese name: Maitake (My-ta-key).
