OK, what the heck, let's keep going on the Venus theme. First, does Venus de Milo have dimples of Venus? You'll have to judge for yourself.

Although it is a Greek statue, Venus is the Roman name for the goddess represented by the statue. The two-part trivia question today is:

Where is Venus de Milo displayed?

Been to Greece where there are so many representations of Aphrodite. Been to the Louvre in Paris where so many sculptures are on display.

I'm with Cameron, knew her name was Aphrodite but had to look up how to spell Louvre, so I guess I'll lose stars on this one.

The reason I thought you might get the bonus TM is that it is a health scare about which you can say been there done that. As far as the desk, yes, she picked it up by its legs and spun around throwing it at me as if she were throwing a discus . Sheesh. Almost hit my head. She threw it 6-7 feet! Strong angry kid. I work at what we call a Comprehensive Services Site. Used to be for Emotionally Disturbed students, but now I have autistic, intellectually disabled (formerly called mentally retarded), and the ED kids. Very different from 15 years ago. The ED ones are much more violent and out of control now. The others really shouldn't be in the same class with them. There really isn't anything we can do if the parents won't agree to move her to a more restrictive, private school (paid for by my county). I am planning to call our union just to see what my rights are and if the district can be held responsible for not keeping staff safe. Our principal told me we will have to keep her. Then, he left. Typical. Unfortunately, mine is a right-to-work state, so our unions are not really unions and we have no leverage. Sigh. It is a mess. Wow. Didn't mean to go into all that! Sorry. I am going with reading but think any activity that puts one into another person's life helps to build empathy whether that is volunteering and interacting with others or more indirectly through reading and watching video or listening to information about someone's life. In college I read mostly Russian literature on my own. Don't remember how I got started but found the long complicated novels fascinating. And full of f character growth and description. Probably pure escapism. As a kid I read whatever I could get my hands on. Would go to our small library infrequently and read everything in one section before moving onto the next one. Also read my mom's romance books and true confession magazines as well as my dad's true crime mags. And of course, teen bop fan magazines that my sisters' bought. And...my teen uncle's hundreds of comic books.

DenmarkCongratulations! I think you all arrived! Denmark is the country. There was an attack in Copenhagen that killed two and wounded five and is being talked about as echoing Paris and the Charlie Hebdo and grocery store shootings. In this case, he attacked a cafe hosting a free speech debate and a synagogue where a bat mitzvah was underway. Both places had high security or there might have been a much higher death toll. The gunman was killed after fleeing the scene. Same sort of profile: homegrown, criminal, became an ideologically motivated killer in prison. There has not been an awful lot of coverage, it seems, although it finally hit the front page above the fold of the Post today. So sad and so very disturbing. I will never understand the mindset of people who behave so barbarically. Anyway, Denmark turns out to be much more impressive than I had imagined. I will link a page for you. I plan to check out some of the other countries as well. Okay, I do not get how these links work here niw. The link popped up in green at the beginning. Sigh. Let's see if I can copy stars for you. Not holding my breath. Have a wonderful week. They are predicting 4-8 inches of snow for us and continued cold temps near 0* F. I will take the snow with possible school closing (who am I kidding? If we get more than 2 inches, we close. Ha).

Congratulations! Stars and roses for all three of you. Josephine (nee Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie) became the wife of Napoleon and was crowned Empress by him when he became emperor. I will link a wiki site, although it was not my original source. Too lazy to type all the info out for you, but I have always felt a little sorry for Josephine. All in all though, not a bad life. A friend of mine found a concrete statue -- not Venus, an angel with her wings broken off -- at the dump. She had part of an arm missing, and her head was broken off. They repaired the head, and decided that if no arms was good enough for Venus/Aphrodite, a missing hand just added charm to their pretty garden statue.

ThinMan's thunderstorms of yesterday rolling in here, putting an end to a couple days of gloriously cool and un-humid weather.

Trivia: Ditto Cameron & Annette. I, too, have had good fortune to see Ms. de Milo "in the flesh" (and Mona is a lot smaller than I expected). Does she have those dimples? Well, weren't they named for her?

N, your friend's an angel for rescuing that statue and giving it new life.

I'd never before noticed the disconnect between a Greek statue with a Roman name. Makes me think about how the French ended up with these treasures.

I'm wondering how the French kept those treasures, considering the looting during WWII?! The ladies, are as usual, of course, correct.

It seems to me those dimples become more pronounced with age. I don't recall having them in the days, when I wore bikinis. But I have them now! Venus must be a younger woman.

If you wonder how the French got all that stuff for the Louvre, have you ever thought about the British Museum? Or, the Vatican Museum! Both are loaded with artifacts from "other places" than where they are on display.

All those explorers were busy carting stuff back home!

The trick to seeing the Mona Lisa (in the Louvre) up close without a crowd is to have a museum pass. About 30 minutes before closing, go straight in and head to the Mona lisa. Everyone else is on their way out and you get the painting mostly to yourself. Then, go back the next day to see everything else.

Oh sigh - I can't believe TM hasn't resolved this yet!!! lol. They were on strike at the Louvre when I got to Paris - barely got to see Versialles, but oh my...

I bow to the greater minds above.

I don't know about the rest of the treasures in the Louvre, but I know how they got the Venus de Milo. They bought her, but not without a tussle with some bad guys in which she had her arms broken off.

Apparently there are other Venus/Aphrodite statues here and there, done by various sculptors of old. Maybe some of them have dimples?
