Potting Lithops question

I just picked up some new lithops. When potting, I'm wondering if I should use only the soil mix, or whether it might actually be better to use mix for the bottom layer (where the roots are), and small pebbles for the upper layer (where there are no roots, only the underground part of the leaves).

I'm thinking since there are no roots anywhere in the upper part, the soil is probably not doing anything good. On the other hand, small rocks/pebbles might help air circulation and allow the soil mix below to dry out faster. That said, I heard that lithops can absorb moisture through the leaves, in which case some moisture in the soil around the leaves could be beneficial.

I'm using a mixture of about 5:2 drainage (granite grit, coarse sand, perlite and turface) to organic (potting soil and coir).

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
