More In Terms of Photos - My Greenhouse (13 Photos)

I have yet another uphill battle because I've learned that my new greenhouse/prophouse isn't adapting to the purpose I had intended it for. It appears to me that my problem of humidity can only be solved with a very expensive fogger on a humidistat (300-400 dollars totalling) which I couldn't plan ahead financially for and it's causing me much concern, honestly. Then, now my understocks continue to dye one after another or never -- pushed... I don't know. They showed a little push I had thought, most did actually, but then that was it. The roots in most of these cases were wound around in the pots so they were the eventual actual cause of the death of both scion and seedling... it was evident to me though that I'd be losing my scions. Plants I potted myself, I've been able to regraft because they are growing correctly, go figure.. Like a genius, two years in the running I purchased these as, 'ready to go!'. So, all to all, I've decided no matter what, I'll grow seedlings for sale on line as 2 or 3 year plants just so I can afford to get a business going. Anyway, I'm capable to grow 3240 seedlings a year, with precision, then I'll fool around grafting some stuff. And, I'll be able to accomplish a lot of goals of getting a lot of trees on my property, (etc, etc, etc -). I have some ideas for a grafting plan in the longrun.

This is my operation for a 16 foot long house that's six wide and respectively 5 and 8 feet in height.

Some of you will indeed remember this photo. It's me fall of 2007 standing next to a Dawn Redwood tree I grew from seed in March of 2006 that is now two years old (it's March of 2008) so this photo is of a tree that's less than two years old but is taller than 6 feet. A remarkable seedling because another I planted grew to only 3' last year. Here's me and the tree:

I think you can solve the humidity issue for a lot less $$. Your grafts seem to be in flats. How about a pair of clear garbage bags for each flat. One up from the bottom that stays in place and one down over the top of the 1st to seal things up. The humidity should stay high and your investment is minimal if it doesn't work.

I've done something similar at home with the anderson flats and the upper bag always has condensation inside.

how about a couple sections of newsprint under each tray ... retains flow through water ..but not to excess ...

Wow, that is beautiful. I agree, please keep posting more pictures. The wooden scroll work on top is beautiful! Well done, I canÂt wait to see it in the garden and surrounded by morning glories! You have inspired me to keep working on my design. I had a couple people explain that as long at it works then who cares what it looks like. I give classes on our land though, and it is part of the garden. I would love to have my greenhouse accent my garden instead of being an eyesore. I am trying to motivate everyone in my classes to take up gardening and other such things, I think that is easier with beautiful accents everywhere. Thank you for sharing pictures! Keep us posted on your hard work!

He builds sets and props etc for film and tv and right now it is built kind of like a set. It is held together with metal springclips and it will be able to be moved in pieces; probably 4 walls and 2 roof pieces. I haven't asked him but I think he will probably wait to put all the windows in until it is in place. We are now in the middle of getting our second foot of snow in a week so it all seems like a long way off again. (last week we thought we'd have it up by the end of march) Wheeling it in and out by the season won't be an option seeing as the shop is in minneapolis and we're in saint paul! And..I know how some of you feel about this.. I want to try and find a way to heat it through the winter. And get this: he says he has a plan to somehow hook up the greenhouse to the hot tub heat. Don't ask me! Have any of you ever heard of such a thing? Anyway, more on that later. Thanks for all your nice comments! I'm trying to be patient but it's not one of my strong suits...

Here's some Iris that I don't have names for. If any of you do, I would appreciate knowing. This has a smaller than normal bloom although the scapes are the height of any TBI. This is not the true color of this iris. It is a deep rust red and it's scapes/blooms are just over the leaves.Making it much shorter than the TBI..I don't know much about Iris but I know this type must have it's own name...is it a Standard? a Border? any one want to guess what it is? This is a TBI and in the next picture you can see it's true color on the far right of the photo. I have no idea what this is but since many of my iris came from you, maybe someone will recognize it. This is a photo of the 3 unknowns above showing a more accurate depiction of their color and height in relation to each other. Debbie

Ken your idea might well work in the sense that the heat mats when wet humidify the air. All I would need to do is position the newspaper under my flats but above the heat mat. It definitely could help.

Keith, I have no Anderson flats yet but coincidentally I ordered a case today (10 x 20's). Thanks.

Conifer50 the man in action my source was Schumaker's. I donated quite a lot to a group called wintersown.org but I also kept a lot. It seems to me that I spent 25 dollars or a little more.

i might come up with other idea with a couple pix of the tented area that needs the humidity ...

do you drink bottled water .... take an empty one... cut off the top ... and refill with some water.. and insert a few into the tented part ... the mat will heat it.. and it will humidify it all ... but they might be tip-able ... tape 3 of them together for more stability ...

any type of bowl ... wider is better than taller.. if you have the room ...

That's the problem Ken, the entire greenhouse needs high humidity, now just a tent chamber....the whole she-bang.

Currently when I tent the south wall the temp at night drops way too low. I have the same problem during the day.

The whole idea is to SEAL the entire tent of the freshly-grafted plants....DAY & NIGHT for the first couple weeks and then to let the tent material rest to the floor thenafter... i haven't been able to do this.

Right now the grafts are up high off the floor. This year I got screwed not knowing what was going to happen. I don't even have in most cases, 2" from the top of the seedling understocks to the roof of the greenhouse.

I think I need a fogger.. IN FACT I'm Sure.. ... .... ..... .... OH WELL ;) LoL

How long did it take for your Larix mastersiana seeds to germinate, once you got them out of cold-strat ?
I'm beginning to be concerned about mine....

Sowed 1/22
Advanced to plugs on 2/13 so germination was probably a few weeks prior to 2/13 or a week.

I had so many come up I felt guily.

I am sure (contrary to what i do usually by soaking seeds prior to cold strat) I didn't soak them.

They were as thick as thieves. During their time in cells, I lost 1 out of 100. I potted up 99 over the course of the past few days.
