Japanese Painted fern problem....

I just planted two Japanese painted ferns last week, and on one of them I am noticing light brown tips on the fronds. Is this a sign of too much water? I stuck my finger in the dirt, and it still feels moist. I have stopped watering it, and it doesn't seem to be getting any worse, nor any better. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The brown tips will stay on the fronds, the tissue is dead and won't recover. If the problem's still there the brown will keep spreading. You need to check on new growth to see if the plant is definitely back to normal growth.

The problem could also be chemical, something in the water, soil, or fertiliser if you've used any. Another problem could be low humidity levels.

I purchased spores on ebay for Japanese painted fern and was dismayed to read the complicated directions that came with them. Is it a complete waste to simply sprinkle them on soil where my other painted ferns are growing?

The JPF is easily divided, since it spreads by rhizones, you can remove a section of the rhizome (with a frond or growth bud) using a sharp knife or shovel. The Autumn Fern is a little more difficult, since it has a woody crown. Slice off a portion, with a frond(s) and some healthy roots with a knife or shovel. Pot the divisions in a moisture retentive potting mix and keep moist, in total shade, until they appear to be growing normally. The big box stores near me stock both of these during the growing season and have seen small pots there for $3-4. There is an Autumn Fern cultivar 'Brilliance',now available, that retains the bronze color well into the late spring-early summer. Have seen those at the box stores, also. Rb
