Linda I'm not sure how long it was cold in the GH but I'm guessing it was the 2 days we had with those absolutely frigid temps. The temporary heater that's in there has done fine with temps in the upper 20's but I guess the combination of temps in the teens along with the high wind did them in. To add insult to injury my new electric bill is $600. That's certainly less then it was when I was keeping the GH in the 60's but it's still outrageous. Propane is so much less but it was easier to set this up with an electric heater. We heat the big GH at the farm with propane. How long were your temps below freezing on the porch? Thanks Lucy. Plants are the only subjects that I can take decent pics of. Werewolf I've been counting the days till spring since the temps went below 60! LOL I hate the cold. BTW what were you trying to link? That bites Karyn. Hopefully they will survive. You have the most unusual plants. I gave my Mom a blooming jade plant last year for Christmas. It was the first time I had seen one in bloom as well.

It's 4 am & I'm up checking the porch. It is 38 with up to 34 mph gusts.

The night it happened, I checked them at midnight & everything was fine. I didn't check again until it started to feel really cold in the living room (the dog even gave up her spot on the couch & went to the upstairs hall). There is an unheated basement underneath the porch & the eaves of the house over the top (uninsulated). The only side that gets any heat is sharing a wall with the downstairs bedroom & living room. The ice was really solid & they were frozen together in big clumps. As soon as we get a warm day, I'm moving the potted ones to my friend's basement with the others & hope they will come back from the roots. That will give me a lot more space & if I only try to heat half the porch, it will be easier (oh boy, more plastic). Next year, rigid foam insulation panels.

I think that my variegated chalice might come back. I started cutting off the foliage and the stems feel firm and don't look discolored. I can't tell if my Petra volubilis is a total goner because the stems are so woody. The Rangoon Creeper and Strophanthus gratus are also questionable. Those were the plants closest to the front and the ones I've gotten a good look at. Some of my newer brugs that were in small pots are spent because the soil froze solid but the ones in larger pots will hopefully return from the roots. I'm dreading sorting through everything today. I haven't seen my uncommon stuff yet and much of it will be hard to replace. DH is so matter of fact about the plants and just says if they look dead buy new ones. He doesn't understand why I want to see if any are salvageable. Maybe I'm just weirdly emotional about them? lol I hope everyone is enjoying themselves today.

sorry to hear about your gh.

We have always used a 240v heater on a separate circuit and has never given us probs, and very economical on electricity. I keep it about 52 at night and there is not even a bleep in the electric bill in winter that we can notice. My gh is about 12x14 and built 22 years ago, so not the most energy effec, but still holding up well.

Here is a link for the heater, it's worth the investment. Mine usually last about 10 years or so in the gh.

Also, if you need any plants, I will have lots of extras in spring that you are welcome to.

Joe that looks exactly like the heater that I had, just a different brand. Mine is on a circuit with the AC (never used at the same time) but draws a ton of electricity. It's already been replaced once. We had an electrician in a couple weeks ago to give us an estimate for putting in another curcuit and more outlets in the GH. This is the Dayton I used. yeah mine is on a dedicated circuit- just for the heater.

I also use one of those Delongi oil filled radiator type heater (Home Depot- about $35). That seems to radiate a ton of heat and actually does the majority of the heating, until it gets real cold like we just had, then the red heater kicks in.

This is great! So many people are offering to help me replace what was lost. It's truly appreciated. It didn't get as warm as predicted today so we didn't go through the GH. I figured what was still alive didn't need the shock of going out into the cold. There's no way I can empty it without setting plants outside. I really want to make my way to the beck of the GH and see what's up with my Agapetes. I had thought all my hoyas were ok but the leaves are softening and becomming discolored and my Dichorisandra thyrsifloras look pretty dead. I honestly won't know everything thats gone until I can go through the plants and I can't do that until I get a day around 45-50.

Karyn, I am so sorry to hear about your plants. You have so many unusual varieties and I know how attached you can get to them. I hope the plants will surprise you with their resilience! I hope your new heater is not only efficient but never breaks down on you. I will be glad to send any plants I have to you.
