limes are so sour and have no taste

Hi, I live in Houston and I planted this limes 2 years

ago and I get tons of limes but it has no taste.It's

only sour and they are soft like ready to make

lemonade.

It has no taste,just bidder sour taste.And if I dont

take them off the tree,the limes will turn yellow and

fall to the ground. I planted this lemons in Summer

two years ago.The tree is like 5-6 feet and

I'm in Zone 9. Are limes use for lemonade .

It's a little early for limes to be ready. You actually want them to turn yellow and fall to the ground. Then they will have more flavor. The green limes in the store are immature.

Mr. Texas, I have a question..Are all limes supposed to be yellow when ripe? When I go shopping and look at their lemons in the produce dept, (more than one store) their limes are all green..Does this mean they're not ripe? Thanks, Toni

I'd vote for maybe Meyer lemon? they are more round than other lemons, color up a little more orange color that most lemons but are definitely lemon flavor, just a little less acid that most lemons but still tart, and the dark bark for an in ground tree is about right. the exact parentage of Meyer is not known, as it was discovered in the open, rather than part of a breeding program, but some have speculated that it may have been a cross with a lemon and an orange.

While the cultural advice given may be valid for citrus, it sounds to me like that is not your "problem." I suspect that you have sweet lime trees (C. limettioides), a variety that, as you say, has a very bland, dilute taste. It is sometimes used as a rootstock under other varieties, and it is popular in its own right as a substitute for drinking water in areas of the world where the water is not safe. But if that's what you have, no cultural program will "improve" the quality of the fruits.

Wow, that's very interesting John. My Meyer lemons turn so yellow, they start to turn orangish yellow if I leave them on the tree too long. I don't think we always have that much temp variation during the day - 30 degrees - as we're pretty close to the coast. Like today, for instance. Highs 69, lows 57. All my lemons, Meyer and either Eureka or Ponderosa (determination is still not made), yellow up really well for me. I might get that sort of temp variation in the winter, but not so much spring/fall and even summer. And why is the mango a clue?? Patty S.

lime Jello, sour cream and pineapple mold (& au gratin potatoes)

Here is the lime Jello recipe. Make it the day before serving. I will look up the au gratin recipe for you later. Buy the small box of lime flavored Jello and the small sized can of crushed pineapple and 8 ounces of sour cream. Drain the pineapple well, pressing the pineapple with a large spoon in a sieve to get the juice, and save the juice. Follow the directions on the box for how much boiling and cold water to use to mix it, but use all the drained juice for the cold water, adding enough water to make it the right amount. Sometimes I use 2 or 3 tablespoons less of the cold water to help make the Jello firmer. When the Jello is thoroughly dissolved, stir in 1 cup of sour cream--I use a whisk and room temperature sour cream to make it combine well but do not beat it with the whisk or it will make it frothy, just stir it. Then cool it in the mixing bowl in the refrigerator until it is starting to set and is somewhat thickened. Stir in the crushed pineapple so it is evenly distributed and pour into a very lightly oiled mold or individual molds or custard cups. Put back in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. When it is time to serve, garnish the individual salad plate or serving plate with leaf lettuce. Run your finger around the edge of the mold to loosen the top of the mold from the very top of the edge. Fill a large bowl or the sink with hot water and dip the bottom of the mold up to the edge of the Jello into the hot water. 5 to 10 seconds for a custard cup size mold, 10 - 15 seconds for a large mold. Tip over the cup mold into your hand and give it a good shake. It should drop out onto your hand. For the big mold, quickly tip it onto the lettuce on the plate and give it a good shake to loosen it. Voila. You can make a larger recipe by increasing all the ingredients if you are using a large mold. You could even make this in a lightly oiled glass baking pan, cut it into squares and use a spatula to lift out each serving.

Is true,when you go to the store most of the lime are green.But most of them are from Mexico or hand raise from Texas.But this same limes that I grown are the same one at the store.The limes at the store have flavor and taste and you can
make lemonade.I want to make lemonade with my limes.The limes
from Mexico are for lemonade too.

Irma, you want to make limeade not lemonade..LOL. I've never seen a yellow lime, ever, and I go to different stores. I wonder why they're green and not yellow, but then it'd get confusing becaue most people think of limes as being green..they wouldn't know one from the other, including the check out person..Unless they were the same price, which they should be, it'd be a problem. Enjoy your limeade..just add more sugar to sweeten it up..Toni

Toni, limes turn yellowish when ripe. All of them do. They are picked before they are ripe.

For those of you who grow citrus in the ground, is there a cultural aspect that Irma might be missing? Should she be attending to a citrus specific fertilizer program designed to help the plant produce sugars, for example? I know it's too late for this year, probably, but for the future.

Also, her limes are ripening on the tree and falling to the ground as we speak.

Excuse my bad understanding (I'm Italian) I may repeat answers yet done.
Ripe lemons are yellow, sure, and lemons harvested ripe are a lot better than ones collected unripe !
The big industrial fruit distributors have necessity to conserve they for long time, refrigerated, for so are harvested unripe (green), the fruits yellowish out refrigeration in few days.
Quality is acceptable, but not at all equal to ones ripened on tree.
At home, in similar way, when the fruits begin to be clearly yellow may be collected, and keeped refrigerated.
