Birdsnest Fern

I just bought a Birdsnest Fern. Any tips on repotting it and it's care? It looks like it's in regular potting soil now.

Lots of moisture, organic growing mix that's water retentive but not water-logged, bright shade, and occasional feeding in the summer months. Other than that, stand back and watch it grow! PF

Birds nest ferns are very susceptible to rot, especially if you water over the top of the crown. Another interesting thing is that the root mass is very small relative to the above ground part of the plant. If you have over-potted the plant then obviously you increase your risk of rot and various other bacterial/fungal infections. Over the years I have gravitated to a mix of orchid bark and peat moss. This is very free draining but retains enough moisture between waterings. I'd repot (under-potting) to ensure that going forward you have created as optimal an environment for the plant as possible. BTW birds nest fern roots are typically dark; the best way of doing a quick health-check is to examine the roots to see if they have light coloured tips. If so they are definitely OK. Oh my! There is a visitor in the area from Wisconsin. She spoke to me one day and we struck up a friendship. She enjoys gardening with me and bragging to friends up north that she planted a banana tree! Anyway the two nurseries I visit are GardenArts in New Smyrna Beach and Lindleys Nursery in New Smyrna Beach. This a.m. I talked with Jim the owner of GardenArts. He has birdsnest ferns, elkhorn ferns and those densely packed ferns that are a type of birdsnest fern. The densely packed fern is what was in my picture. People in both stores are great, but it's a long drive for you. My husband will attend a tech session at the Melbourne Porsche store on Mar. 3. Perhaps I could buy what you need and send him down there with them and you could meet him? Look around. I KNOW these two nurseries get plants from the local market. They are both small and personal to visit. I'm sure that in Poinciana frost cloth placed over these plants should be fine unless the weather goes back to what it was 5 yr ago, then if they are in pots they can be moved inside. Need help with naturalistic vivarium for reptiles using plants

(1) Create a Drainage Layer: You need to create a drainage Layer for your plants. If the plant's roots are left in standing water, then the roots may rot causing you problems. You can avoid this by using a layer of pea gravel or lava rock to create a drainage area for your plants. My drainage layer is between 1" to 1.5" deep. (2) Non-Toxic Substrate: The quality of the substrate you grow your plants in is very important! You do NOT want to get ordinary potting soil. Potting soil is filled with fertilizers and other additives that is great for plants, but can be harmful and sometimes fatal to your herp. I know a zoo keeper who uses "Edna's Best Potting Soil" to create vivariums for the zoo's herps. It can be difficult finding a retailer that sells it so please visit their website and type in your zip code to find a store near you that will carry their soil. Their website is http://www.ebstone.org/13_ednas.php. (3) Planting your Plants Do not simply stick your potted plant in the soil of your terrarium. Please remove the plant from your pot, and gently pull away as much soil as you can from the roots. Then rinse away the dirt from the roots in room temperature water. I prefer to treat my water by putting a few drops of de-chlorinator. If you don't have this, you can leave your water out in a sterile, non-metallic open container for about 24 hours. This will allow the chlorine and the fluoride to evaporate. (4) Fertilizer Do NOT use synthetic fertilizers! It can be fatal to your herp. If you're plant is in serious need of a pick me up, I would suggest using an organic fertilizer. (5) Don't ever use pesticides on your plants. (6) Maintenance I think this is the best part. You can shape your landscape by religiously trimming and training your plants. These geckos are nocturnal so I never see them during the day. I was sick of looking at what appeared to be an empty sad little terrarium so I created a vivarium that was aesthetically pleasing to the eye during the day, but still a great home for the geckos. Good point Lee, these remember are epiphytes in the wild and don't appreciate soggy conditions (that can happen in oversized pots). PF

When I bought it,it was FULL of water!! Got it at Lowe's outside Garden Shop and we'd just had a lot of rain. I brought it home and immediately dumped the water off and repotted it into a pot not much bigger than the one it was in. I have no idea how long it had been sitting there full of water, but it looks healthy. Think it'll be okay?

The best trunk-forming houseplant fern there is - and a lot easier to care for than Blechnum gibbum, which is the other candidate for this accolade. With those glossy strappy fronds they're not so dependant on high humdity, but they do still want plenty of light and warm tempertaures. I have mine deliberately pot-bound (the fern is absurdly big relative to the size of the pot!) and soak the crown every single morning, with all the water running straight through into evaporative matting. It's now about 5ft across and a similar height - the 'trunk' is almost a foot tall. Yet it started off as a rescued baby fern from a stripped-down tree frog terrarium - it was probably only three inches wide! Ultra-weak seaweed extract dripped into the watering can, most days, is the only fertiliser.

The only downside - and it's a big one - is the continual attack by scale inesect. Asplenium nidus must be their all-time favourite houseplant host. Swabbing them off is a never-ending battle.

PS These ferns actively PREFER a non-acid compost - so go for standard multipurpose compost when potting up, not the ericaceous stuff that you'd choose for Blechnums and their mates.

Here's a pic of mine. It was absolutely soaking when I bought it and I thought I should go ahead and repot it to get it out of the standing water. Should I do anything different? It's in regular potting soil.

Hey Stepehen, i never realise that A. nidus was a trunk forming fern!(Tree fern?) I used to have one too!

Ah ha! When is a 'tree fern' a tree fern? We all know about Dicksonia and Cyathea, but in my book ANY fern that forms a significant trunk is a tree fern - eg, Asplenium nidus and many of the Blechnums. I think you can add at least another half-dozen genera to the conventionally understood community of tree fern families. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different tree fern species out there - a few of them much closer to hand than you think, hiding behind florists' popular names.

Under really optimum houseplant conditions - room temperature, high light levels, daily watering plus ultra-weak seaweed extract - Asplenium nidus could more than equal the trunk growth rate of Dicksonia antarctica. At least a foot per decade is possible, up to a maximum height of a metre...even more in a rainforest setting. Few owners will achieve anything like this, but only because they don't have the facilities or provide anything more than basic minimum conditions in the first place - Asplenium nidus has the potential if you give it the opportunity.
