How do you measure yours?

Today I bought a Washington Orange tree. It came from America, Hines Nurseries Ltd. I bought it in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. I paid $83.00 (Canadian $).

How do you measure it; from the graft line, from the roots, or from the bottom of the container? Mine is 32 inches from the root line.

It was grafted on a very nice stem, which is about 8 inches long, a beautiful tree. Above the graft line it has 3 well shaped branches. And, guess what? there is a very big orange on it, I mean big, at least to me since I never, never touched an orange on a tree, never have been in America.

Container is narrow and black, 10 inches tall.

Am i going to leave it there or should i transplant it?

I measure from the soil line to the top of the tree. Canada IS a part of America, you just have not been to the United States. You should repot only if the root system has grown to fill the present container. Congratulations, on your new citrus tree. Thanks for the posting. - Millet

Rad, congrats on your new tree..
Repot only if: 1. plant is potbound..w/roots seeping from drainage holes, and/or you can see tiny roots atop soil. 2. If you find soil isn't draining properly. This way, it's best if you use a well-draining soil. Some nurseries plant in too heavy a soil, which retains water..Toni

It sounds like you are on the right track. I don't do hot compost but if you have time it is a good idea. You might consider a compost thermometer to see if you get up to 140 degrees. Hot compost mixes are usually a one time deal - make it and let it cook. Adding items to it takes a longer time. Penny

I've also been keeping my own records for years. As an avid Gardner, I need the data to project what I should be watering for optimum health of my plants. I used the hardware store gauges, understanding they do take maintenance. They need to be emptied daily for accurate numbers. For my historical comparisons, I use the Weather Channel. It's a dig to find the info but you can get historical averages. I set up my own spreadsheet with formulas to total monthly totals and close out every year and compare all against historical. It's a little work, but I find the talking heads on the local news hasn't got a good clue about what is really going on from a local standpoint. I hear drought when I'm swimming and I'm parched when they say I should be treading water. I'm also upgrading my weather station hardware this year to a better system to assist with the manual totals. Aside from some satellite pictures and some forecasting on big systems, I find more and more the TV weather forecasters are pretty useless.

It isn't that I'm so wonderfully organized, Pam, I require some help in remembering what I want to do. Sometimes I come inside and remember that I had a wonderful thought about adding something to a certain spot, but I've already forgotten what it was. I can't remember what bloomed in April as compared with May. Sometimes when I read my notes, if there isn't a photo with them, I am not sure what they mean. Today I looked at a file with nicotiana and lilies together and a note about purple nicotiana that I don't remember at all, and it is only a month old. If there isn't a note with the plants I'm about to plant, they'll go in the wrong places when I get distracted. You all can feel free to worry about me at any time. From what I remember during the is chia a good thing to add to my diet days...I figured they were a good alternative to flax seeds in smoothies when I didn't have any pre-ground up flax in the house (I grind about a week's worth at a time and keep in the fridge). The reason being that chia seeds didn't need to be ground to get the benefits, of which there are many, from what I read. I would suggest that next time you buy a bag, get the unground variety and see if that helps with the teeth situation. I will get the seeds stuck in my teeth sometimes, but everything gets stuck in there anyways... ETA, I don't soak mine, for what it's worth.

Radovan, is the pot a regular nursery pot, or a 4" grow-pot?I'm asking since you described it as narrow. If it is in a grow-pot, I'd repot it.

There is a photo below of a black grow pot that some citrus nurseries use.

Isn't it exciting to get a new tree that is already fruiting?!

Radovan..This is what I do! If I get a tree that is shipped in a pot an tree is healthy an doing good I repot in one of my selected pots and planting it in my prefered media CHC & Peat

If I recieve a tree in a pot and it is not doing well I keep it in that pot for a week or two and let it aculmate
to its environment

There has been some talk here about the narrow and deep pots being the best. I like my clay pots I guess it like cooking on a old gas stove....Dale

Rad, check out www.treequest.com i bought several growing containers from this company..prices are reasonable and fast delivery.
Dale, clay pots will work, too..but I like treequests pots because of their shape..
My citrus are shipped in those like Lisa displayed, so when repotting, roots are dropped in pot, then filled w/medium of one's choice..Toni

Dale, any hints on finding affordable clay pots? I like them, but a decent sized ceramic pot here runs $50 on up. I've seen fancy ones for $190!

Or are you using the red clay pots? Those are too fragile for me, I've had them break in the van on the way home from the nursery (I live on a dirt road). Any little bump seems to cause them to crack/shatter. Funny thing though, the "rectangular" clay planters seem very tough, I have yet to break one.

I'm forced to use plastic/foam pots due to weight (I move my trees a lot) and durability.

But oh how I love the look of a glazed dark blue ceramic beauty!(G)

in finding a rectangular pots.. So lucky

My Mom is at (MGH) Marquette General Hospital Its about 200 miles from where we live
They have the biggest red clay pots I ever seen They have plants potted in pots in that big pot I will look forward in your postings in lew of my own Thank You Lisa once again...Dale
