should I use pine needle or other mulch in moss garden?

I am trying to start a moss garden. It is a patchwork now of small pieces I have begged and gathered from friends, my lawn, fence posts, etc. and I am misting it and hoping it all "takes". Some is turning brown, but we have had some cold nights and warm days while the tree's leaves haven't come out all the way so the poor moss is probably confused like most of the other plants in Wisconsin are this spring. Until it starts to fill in, what is best advice to do with all the bare spots between the patchwork of moss? Should I just leave it and keep it weeded or should I put compost or pine needle mulch on it? Any other suggestions? Also, has anyone out there had success with a buttermilk or beer blender moss mix to grow new moss? Last question... has anyone purchased moss from an online nursery that specializes in moss and had success transplanting to their garden? I would like to get more and different species then the few I have cobbled together.
