What type of mushrooms are these?

Hi,

I have a ton of these mushrooms coming up in my garden. Are they shitake?

They are shitake ONLY if you SEEDED shitake spores in your garden. I wouldn't advise eating any mushroom that just appears in your garden. So many poisonous 'shrooms look like the good kind. A REALLY good book is the Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. It's got loads of full color photos. (I wouldn't want to guess what your variety is, but DONT EAT IT.)

Maybe you have a Mycological Society in your area? (mushroom club) Look them up on google (enter your city and mycology) and hopefully you can take your mushrooms to the next meeting to have them professionally identified. It would be too cool if they were a choice edible, but not too cool risking your death if they're not ;)

Yes, it is actually quit pretty. Well, these mushroooms appear every year at the same time, at the same location. So there is something underneat that this is growing on, I am guessing an old tree stump, as the previous owners did clear some trees in my yard. In all my research I 'think' it is a Jack-o-Lantern mushroom. Seems to fit all the descriptions. Being a Jack-o-Lantern makes it poisonous !!!

Whatever they are, they are NOT chanterelles. Your mushroom looks like a basidiomycete of some sort. The gills don't look right (chanterelles have ridges, not gills), and the coloration isn't correct for chanterelles either. Also, you'll really want someone in the field with you for a positive ID. If you're just trying to ID for fun, this is fine, but please do not consider eating a mushroom you are not 100% sure about. And you should never be 100% sure about a mushroom ID'd over the internet.
