Japanese Painted Fern

I am wanting to plant these and wondering if they will survive in a place that gets summer sun 1 to 5 in the afternoon. almost no sun in the winter.

These ferns would not like hot afternoon sun.

Also, they are not a fern to choose if you want something to look at in winter, as they die back completely.

I do not think it will work. If it was one of the evergreen ferns I think it would work. It may need a rest period to survive.

They do well here in Pennsylvania planted outside, and come back each year. Winter temperatures here can go down to zero degrees F. If they will not overwinter indoors, they may need a period of dormancy or cold. Why not keep one inside for a few months, then plant in a sheltered spot outside? When your clump is large enough, you can experiment with offshoots.

I love the color it has. Is there a fern or fern like plant with color that is a evergreen?

I have several Japanese Painted Ferns around a small Japanese Maple that get sun in the afternoon and they are thriving. The amount of sun depends on the time of the year, but I think it ranges from 3 to 5 hours. I do make sure the maple is well watered, so this helps the ferns too.
