I AM SO SORRY this is so late. Here I am sitting having my tea and toast and reading the paper when it suddenly occurs to me that TODAY is my day to challenge all of you. AARRGGHH.

Good thing I already have a question ready to go. For all you savvy gardeners, can you tell what is the most widely grown plant in the world?

Good one Cyn, I'm thinking it's probably a grain, but which one? Must give this more thought.

Happy Saturday, Cyn!! It does come early, and this is my least favourite day to work!! Oh well.

Th most widely grown plant - hmmmm. Not the most common crop...oh, here I go down the rabbit hole again. lol.

OK, I sorta got you, but mnwsgal is right!! "One of the largest items ever sold was a World War II submarine sold by a small town in New England that decided it did not need the historical relic anymore." Could I find any info. on the sub, or the own?? NO! Very frustrating. Other eBay trivia you might find interesting: The most expensive object offered in an online auction was a oil refinery that was offered by eBay in February 2000. There was no bid. Aug. 26, 1999: A human kidney is offered on eBay. Before the auction is taken down, bids reach $5.7 million. All sorts of human body parts have been put up for auction - and taken down by eBay, which prohibits such sales. Feb. 8, 2001: Adam Burtle of Seattle sells his soul on eBay for $400. EBay has a policy of not allowing souls to be sold, but Burtle's offer was undetected until after bidding closed. Burtle is suspended from the site. Canada was up for sale on eBay.ca for 5 days but the highest bid was by The Sun Newspaper - $2,000. There were 14 bids. The country of Canada Item #2913179800 was for sale under the category of Everything Else: Weird Stuff: Totally Bizarre. - Sadly this would not even cover our national debt. 1. I guess the Philadelphians objected to ringing the bell on a Sunday. We had blue laws even when I was young in the 1950s and no stores were open. From ushistory.org: The most famous crack in history, the zig-zag fracture occurs while the Liberty Bell is being rung for Washington's birthday. The Philadelphia Public Ledger takes up the story in its February 26, 1846 publication: "The old Independence Bell rang its last clear note on Monday last in honor of the birthday of Washington and now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and dumb. It had been cracked before but was set in order of that day by having the edges of the fracture filed so as not to vibrate against each other ... It gave out clear notes and loud, and appeared to be in excellent condition until noon, when it received a sort of compound fracture in a zig-zag direction through one of its sides which put it completely out of tune and left it a mere wreck of what it was." Some historians believe that a squabble over money led to this final crack. Christ Church claimed an exclusive priviledge of ringing the bells on Washington's Birthday, as that was the church Washington was affiliated with while he lived in Philadelphia. The city paid the church a $30 bell-ringing fee for "service to the illustrious dead." However, in 1846, it seems other churches wanted in on the action. Why should Christ Church get all the money and glory? The debate was played out in the newspapers. Ultimately it was decided to press the Liberty Bell into service and discontinue paying for patriotism. Gotta love those Philadelphia politicians. 2. Now, I did think someone might just guess this one. From the Farmer's Almanac: Old Glory Did you know, that there have been 28 versions of the U.S flag to date, and that the most recent one, designed after Alaska and Hawaii joined the union, was the result of a school project? Robert Heft was 17 when he came up with the flag design in 1958. He originally got a B- on the project, but when his pattern won the national competition to become the next flag, his teacher raised his grade to an A. Smart teacher! Have a wonderful 4th everyone. Hooray! People got the answer, but not right away for most! I feel like I accomplished something. Thinman, this is tough! No more Friday night dates for you during F.M. season. Five stars go to Midnightsmum for knowing the answer right away, and 4 stars to Little dani and aftermidnight, for giving the right answer after the hint. Thinman and Solana get 2 stars for good arguments/reasoning. Is it the St. John River in New Brunswick that reverses with the tide? I once took a road trip up there, but I didn't go stare at the river reversing. I stared at the Hopewell Rocks instead, and toured a chocolate factory. The Red River (of the north, not the Texas one) begins in the US, then flows north into Cananda. It forms the boundary between North Dakota and Minnesota. Because the river remains frozen to the north in spring, yet the river flows north, flooding is a recurring problem along this river as the tundra of North Dakota thatws a little earlier than the tundra of Manitoba :) .

I should have more clearly stated: I can think of one which Brits and Yanks spell the same way. Nell nailed my answer. Lorna came close to another one except the 'i' and 'e' aren't in alphabetical order in ambidextrous. Honorable mention for Edna who suggested TM leave us a care package in advance. ;-) I noticed 'facetious' when I first learned to spell it, added the 'ly' to fit in with "A E I O U and sometimes Y". There may well be other answers. It occurred to me while editing some British text recently that the 'ou' spellings like 'behaviour' might yield words with the same characteristic. Zigzag ~ I'd gladly have granted extra time if no one had gotten it. That's the only example I'm aware of. Let us know if you find another. Nell ~ by TWICE do you mean you know of such a word? I seem to be stuck in grains soooooo, I'm guessing wheat.

Annette, who's hoping the rain stays away so I can get some weeding done.

Hmmmmm. So most widely grown doesn't necessarily mean the plant that is grown in the biggest quantity, right? Does it mean the plant that is grown over the largest geographic area?

Shouldn't mess with a mathematician/scientist, should I, TM! Yes, I think it is geographically-speaking. This palnt has been grown on every continent except Antarctica.

what is confusing me is the word gardener in the question. Farmers grow rice or wheat. I'm lost. I guess I'll let the alzheimer's take over (until I try tomorrow.

Not trying to throw you off. Farmers are actually the folks who grow this and not in paddies...

Okay, not rice, which is grown in paddies. Now I am thinking of another crop which is not exclusively used for humans.

I have been busy outside all day and my feet are hurting. It is still wet and cold enough for long sleeves. Tomorrow I will plant a few things anyway as expecting more rain.

I originally thought wheat but now I wonder about tea........hmm

Ah, but there was one in my post, gg, and you picked up on it. The answer is wheat which has been cultivated for more than 7,000 on every continent excepy Antarctica.

Bobbie, do I owe you stars? If I picked up on your clue, I think you were guessing corn, but I could be wrong. If I'm right, I love the clue!

Thanks for the stars Cyn, I was pretty sure wheat grew most everywhere, I thought about rice but I don't think much if any is even grown in my neck of the woods, corn and potatoes also crossed my mind but I settled on wheat, thinking flour for bread :). I know, my mind works in mysterious ways, you'd be rolling on the floor laughing if you knew some of my deduction methods.

No stars for me. I was going with corn/maize. I know that new varieties of wheat are being developed as an answer to world hunger.
