My Thanksgiving Cactus is Budding! :)
Comments (38)This is a very exciting thread I must say! I have a number of TCs that have bloomed or are still in bud. I keep mine out on the balcony till late October when temps can drop all the way down to 3-5 degrees C. Once the buds reach some 5mm I take the plants in and keep them at room temps while they are blooming. They then are moved to their winter quarters where I also overwinter my Epiphyllums and Selenicereus at 3-5C at night and around 5-10C daytime. I do let the soil go dry before I water and while dormant I hardly ever water at all. In the picture below is my white TC a month ago - I fully agree with the observations on the purplish tinge to the petals - happens if you keep your plants at lower temps when they're setting buds - clearly my case. A completely white TC, including the pistil, is a very rare variety, not as rare as to warrant $100 for a small cutting of course, but still. Lena...See MoreIt's Thanksgiving Cactus time! Comments (85)Hello! I am new here, but I also love these lovelies. In Latvian shops unfortunately we don't have labelled Schlums. They are sold as "Christmas cactus" and the shop assistant looks at you weird if you call it "Thanksgiving cactus". I guess it's because we don't celebrate Thanksgiving and not everyone has given a thought about schlums. Today I asked if they know names for schlums they are selling. The answer was no, there isn't any label to see where it has come from so my cacti are NOID, but I have tried to ID some by looking at photos. Today I think I bought "Samba Brazil" *squeals*, I will post photos tomorrow. Today I want to post photos of two I have no idea what they are called. Since files were huge I put links. Perhaps you could play ID for me please? Maybe there is someone who can ID them just looking at photos *looking around hopefully* Yellow one: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0001.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0002.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0003.jpg.html Orange: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0004.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0005.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0006.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0007.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0008.jpg.html This post was edited by Lii-sama on Fri, Jan 3, 14 at 15:01...See MoreThanksgiving Cactus... Questions on new buds & pest
Comments (15)Don't use a sewing needle to scrape anything off, it is too sharp. If scale, spraying or wiping with a q-tip is enough; scale usually have hard 'shell' and neem or alcohol solution will dissolve it. You will be able to just wipe off dead scale with cotton ball or tissue. It usually gets off easily if using the q-tip. (You will probably see little red blood to...) Scraping with the fingernail is usually done to see if it actually is a pest (sometimes there could be spots on the leaves that are not caused by pests). The 2 brown spots you are referring to (I circled them in your photo) looks like scale, but photo is not clear enough for me to be 100% sure. Gill gave you good advice how to check for pests. Rinsing plant in the water would help a lot, even with mild infestation. If you had serious spider mite or mealy bug infestation, you would be able to see lots of "white stuff", like webs. That is not visible in your photos. Rina...See MoreNew buds on Thanksgiving cactus
Comments (12)I don't know if these plants are a different cultivar or not. They came potted together (I had thought I bought peach, but some of the plants were white.). The leaves, or segments are larger than my other plants, but maybe it has a better spot on my lanai for optimum growth. I have never seen it bud so heavily. I am thinking it is the unusual temps we have had this year that threw everything off for my TCs. We were still in the low 90s with overnight lows of 70 in mid-November this year. Then we finally dropped low enough for normal blooming by Dec. 29th - waaay later than usual for me. I credit the heavy budding to recent weather that dropped to highs are 60 with overnight lows in the low 40s. This 'Florida cold' has lasted for a few weeks. (I know the folks who just endured the blizzard don't feel a bit sorry for me!) And maybe I'm just lucky with all the buds!...See Morelii_sama 6
