Key lime propagation by cutting

I have a reasonably mature key lime planted in my front lawn that flowers/fruits regularly. My attempts to grow a new plant from seed from this one have been SLOW. All other citrus I have tried from seed have grown much faster.

My key lime this year sent out a new growth from near the base. A long, single branch about 2 feet long that grew out in only about 2 months and continues to grow. The new branch is all still "green" wood.

This branch cannot last - it sticks straight out the side and eventually will tear itself off under it's own weight. SO I would love to cut it off and try to root it. However, is taking a cutting from low on the tree a bad idea? If I do take it, do I take the whole thing and try to root it, or just the last 6 inches or so?

Any suggestions?
