New To Brugs - and ohhhh sooo confused

OK...let me say I have searched for the answers but after reviewing so many posts, I am just darn confused!

I have cuttings growing in my makeshift greenhouse in the basement (growlight, plastic tent under the light for humidity etc). They are doing great! Since this is my first experience with them, I want to make it a happy (read successful) one!

I realize people may have a difference of opinion so...Now the questions:

1. Fertilizing - when do you start before planting outdoors? I heard a month before, but I was thinking a tad earlier but I do not know how fast they grow when fertilizing starts.

How often? I have read twice a week, once a week etc. And how much?

2. Fertilizer - I have read fish emulsion, blue podwer etc. I like organic stuff as a rule but am open. And is miracle gro the blue powder?

What are your routines that work (meaning...do you switch the type of fertilizer)?

What about the number? I read the 1st number should be highest and also the second number should be the highest.

3. Location - Southern exposure between houses...am I safe to say this is not a good location? Or does anyone know of a name that works well there? It is dry in Denver and temps will often be in the 90's to 100 in the summer...so maybe not. We also get alot of hail sometimes so cross yer fingers!

4. Potting - got some definate answers on that so thanks Wildcat! That was good advice in the post.

5. Watering - lots I know!

6. When to plant outside - I see difference in opinion on temps. Is it safe to assume to plant outside as long it is last frost...or is it last freeze?

Anything else I need to know? Thanks for helping me iron out some thoughts....

As far as fertilizing, it's probably not a good idea to do much of it during the winter. I'd wait until they go outside in the spring, although I have used a very weak solution before. When I did this, I had my cuttings in the house and they were actively growing in very warm temps. Once they go outside (after last freeze and frost), I fertilize about every 2 weeks, but once a week fertilizing would probably give me more blooms.

Fish emulsion is an excellent fertilizer for brugs. Normally I like to alternate between organic and chemical fertilizers. I'm not sure where you saw "blue powder", but they had to have been referring to Miracle Grow or Peters, etc. If you wanted to stay organic, I'd think the fish emulsion by itself would work just fine.

We get the same high temps here as you do, but most of mine are in full sun. I have an un-known ID white in full shade and some others in partial shade. For me, more sun=more blooms, but you'd need to keep an eye on them and make sure they're getting enough water. It also depends on what brugs you're growing. What do you have?

I like to "harden-off" my plants outside for a week or two in a shady spot before planting them out in the spring.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Wildflower. You know...I have way too many for my small lot so maybe I'll experiment and put some on the south side of the house for the heck of it. If it works out...there may be a nice scent drifting in thru the window.

Here is what I do here in Sayville. My brugs are in 16 to 20 inch pots. In the spring I heel them into the ground (bury the pots about 1/2 way to prevent tipping/falling over). When frost threatens, usually late October, I cut them back, my 8 to 9 foot tall standards become 4 feet tall.........and into my basement they go. There is a bit of light from the basement windows, not much really. Basement is in the lower 60's temperature wise. I give them a half gallon of water once a month, this seems to be enough to keep them going, but, not to get them growing. There might be shoot or two here and there, and I usually get a bloom or two (boy, does the house smell good!). If the shoots get too wild, I just cut them off. Come April 1 I water every other day in the basement, this gets them awake and it is out the door and on the patio for the summer on May 1. Bloom for the 4th of July. Cuttings, I pot them up into 6 inch pots and grow them slowly on my window sill, I stick the cutting into the mix, water the heck out of it, then I keep them dry, minimal water (they will root and become semi-dormant, I really do not have room for them to grow much inside) and will pot them up in the spring. Potting mix is ProMixBX. Feed is Peters 20-20-20 supplemented with Epsom Salts and Milorganite. I feed the Peters weekly. My wood for cuttings, I am picky here, I use the semi hard wood, it is not completely green, not completely brown. Seems to root well, but not rot. Brugs root very easily. Just take it easy with them. I have rooted parts from just the tips to "instant standards" which is a long straight branch shoved into a pot. Just pinch the leaves off the branch which will allow it to root, takes about 3 weeks and you are off and growing. Think of them like little green people, I do. That 12 inch plant in a 6 inch pot will become a 5 foot tall blooming specimen in a 16 inch pot in about 3 months in my yard.

Linda I had no idea you were looking for 'Peanut!' Darnit! I've already promised the one cutting I can get off mine to Karyn! She's rather on the small side - but I can manage the one cutting of her! I guess I'll have to go on a Brug-hunt for a 'Peanut' cutting for you! Maybe someone reading this will have a cutting to share with you! Hope so! :) I took a few pics (in the rain) a few minutes ago of her! She does have several buds on her & I'm hoping I get to see them bloom! Also posted a few pics of when she bloomed in the plantroom around Easter time! The smell of her will knock your socks off! Filled the entire house! Well Good Afternoon All; I was outside working on a project when the mailman came and delivered a bunch of bills. Thanks alot. Then he stopped on his way back down the street because he had forgotten a box (how many times do you think that goes back to the PO with him?) Anyway, I am humbled by what I received from Jessica. I had mentioned that Shadymeadow sent me a wonderful loose leaf binder with info about her and her part of the world and that I used it to this day. Jessica made me a book!! The book starts off with a detailed description of the plants she sent. They were beautifully packed and traveled well. One even had a flower already, how cool is that? But then she told me about her and where she is from. I am busy reading it and we are getting an electrical storm so I will have to finish this later but I am amazed and embarassed because my box lacked the time and effort "livingdedgirl" put into mine. diene

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!!! Shirley, so glad they made it :)...and the secret in the soil is...ready...wait for it...wait for it...cow pooh! Yup, cow pooh that is at least 3 years old, so it won't burn the roots. I actually mix it with mulch and dirt, like a dirt smoothie. Works fantastic! and...since its old NO SMELL! There is a mulch store around here that actually sells something very similar to what I have been using for years. I've tried it and that stuff works great too. And best of all, I don't have to do any of the mixing. :) I also split my iris' about every year (or every other). I have a bunch of them so the foliage is a big part of my gardens once they are done flowering. And the nicer it stays the better my beds look. :) Suzanne, your box actually went out yesterday. And I totally forgot, until I got home, that I was suppose to put a del. confirmation on it. I am so sorry! that I forgot. The hostess probably shouldn't be forgetting her own rules, lol! :) Hopefully, you'll be getting them Saturday. Hope you having fun camping. Karen, if you having as much of a crazy time as I am I feel for you! I have decided with to completely dig out my entire back of the house flowerbed and re-plant everything. This be is 15 feet wide and 46 feet long...I think I have officially lost my mind! But, things are poking and starting all over the place and I need more organization than the craziness that has taken over. Besides, I got a new glider for my birthday from my MIL and it needs a nice new home :) DH and the kiddos got me a stone bench for the pond and a new bird bath, which is over in my new daylily bed around the pool. :) I also realized that I need to update the pics on my GW page. They are over 2 years old. My BIL put them on there for me, there is no way I could ever figure that out. If you have multiple cuttings rooting of each one of these, try them in all different light (and microclimate) settings and see what happens!!! We are in totally different zones, but here CG does great in full sun and partial shade. Sunray wants nothing but extreme FULL sun or refuses to bloom. But grown in full sun it stays loaded with blooms. BTW, it's taken me 2 years and planting Sunray's in different spots to figure this out.....I'm growing a couple of others on your list but havn't had them long enough to tell you what conditions work best for them here.

I think growing some next to your windows is a great idea! I need to put some CG's up next to our windows...There's nothing in the world that smells better than those to me.

If you can find it Rabbit poo is a wonderful fertilizer. Strait on or make a tea. It works wonders for my plants.
