It looks like it penguu. It's odd that you noticed the aroma. There must be flowers in there somewhere. A Tillandsia that is very fragrant and is often mistaken for T. usneoides (SP) is this, T. mallemontii. It's blooms are aromatic from just a few inches away, although SP's blooms are lime-green and the T. mall's are purple.

Thuidium delicatulum, sometimes called "fern moss". It is often found on decayed wood but also grows on moist organic soil or rocks.

It would be impossible to id these mosses just by the images alone. In fact only those bryologists who specialize in tropical mosses might be able to get a close approximation as to the genus of each. It's just emerging now? That's weird. Could it be a South African bulbous oxalis? There are a number of hirsute palmate species of those and mostly they're summer dormant so they would be possibly emerging now.
