After 5 hours sitting in water, I place them in soil, mist them and cover them like @Nate G. do. The next morning, they almost fully open, I discover that the small one is a duo and the big one is cluster of 4 plants, a quartet!!! I only buy 2 plants from John but it turn out to be 6 plants 🤣 BUT there's one problem, I see some white hair-like fiber under some leaf, MOLD!!! I bet it is because of the rain water I use to mist them ( since I have no distilled water and tap water in my state is full of mineral stuff) and the dead leaf's sponge like structure that hold water causing mold to grow. I go to Lowe's to buy some limestone and put them in the soil and also remove some dead leaves to prevent mold. Ordered grow light on Amazon but it won't arrive til next week, so I use aquarium led light for now. I also found another plant in the garage that my lil sis bought before, it look so pale brown and I don't think it is alive, but I will give it a try and see if the core is somehow alive. Since I don't have a tent to keep the humidity high, I will use a small aquarium as alternative and barely cover them to increase the humidity. (To be Continue)

`The genus Selaginella is comprised of three basic subgroups, identified as subgenuses. These are Selaginella, Stachygynandrum, and Tetragonostachys. The subgenus Selaginella consists of one native species, S. selaginoides, the subgenus Stachygynandrum of seven native species, and the subgenus Tetragonostachys of 26 natives and 1 hybrid native. Texas has three species of the Stachygynandrum and nine species, maybe ten, of the Tetragonostachys. Most of the species occur in the western portion of Texas with one, S. apoda, found in eastern Texas. Most Selaginellas, and Lycopodiums too, that are grown are from tropical areas and are not native North American species. Not all that much is known about the habitats of our native species. Growing either, especially the native Lycopodiums, can be quite challenging if you approach them from the point of view that they can be treated like any angiospermous plant, which, of course, they are not. Thus my interest in sharing my experiences in their cultivation.

Hello Treehaus, understand your problem but can only speculate as to an answer. I am growing various non-native species in containers in my greenhouse and notice that a couple are almost bleached out entirely while others are green. The conditions for both are the same except for the potting mix. As I failed to note the kind of mix I used I am starting to suspect that it is the soil conditions that are the culprit in the coloration of the plants. With the species you are wondering about, s. uncinata, I would think that some sunlight or dappled sunlight would cause the plant to become redder and more metallic as these are probably reactions to incresing sunlight. My first recommendation would be to try fish emulsion on the plant or a very diluted miracle gro liquid. Note: I am cautious about using fertilizers on club mosses but your thread really makes it an important experiment to attempt. So perhaps repotting into a fresh mix will be helpful and maintain sufficient light with daily watering> this would mean a mix that drains rapidly as you are used to with your xerics but one that can retain moisture or the plant is kept in a very humid atmosphere (60%+). Also there is the question of coolness. One thought I had in looking at my whitish plants is that they are too warm. I have yet to put them on the floor of the greenhouse but believe that a cooler spot may be helpful. The only way I can grow S. kraussiana in my greenhouse without being in a container is to have it on the floor in shade and give it a good misting every day. Hope these comments help or at the least provide approachs you can make in seeing what changes will work under your conditions.

Gary, Tropical species are probably not all that much different than the temperate species in ease of propagation. However they are in two different sections: most temperate species in Tetragonostachys and almost all tropical species in Stachygynandrum. The basic difference is that the "Tetras" can handle drought and have leaves that spiral around the stem while the "Stachy" really need moisture and humidity to do well and have flat stems with leaves ranked along the stem edges. If well grown both types can prove to be spreading. While I am currently growing one species of Stachygynandrum native to North America, S. apoda, outside with the Tetragonostachys species, I would not expect most os the Stachygytnandrum species to do well outside in North America except in areas where humidity is constant snd sufficient to allow growth. Some are naturalized in the southeast USA with S. kraussiana surviving as dumped plants in two reported locations in northern California. I believe there are only 2 species of the Tetragonostachys in Florida and both are probably endangered to nearly extinct. I would hope an effort to master cultivation of these species is being undertaken and if not should be. If you examine the images the plant subject D has rhizoids evident along the stem. If the propgation is healthy and has several of these rhizoids evident then if the media is acceptable the plants should root readily. I guess I need to find the time to work up some reports on the Stachygynandrum species I am growing beside what I have already posted at Photobucket.
