Fern ID: autumn fern?

There are a few ferns in a bed on the north side of my house inherited from the previous owners. I neglected them last year. Because they looked so good, I thought they were "low maintenance". I'd like to give them a bit more attention this year. Can you help me identify this fern? Is it an "Autumn Fern"? It is low-growing (about 18" from ground to tip) and about 10" wide at the widest point. Many of the leaves have had an orange-hue through the winter, but it wasn't as pronounced as some photos I've seen of Autumn Fern on the web.

That does look like an autumn fern. When it starts putting out new growth in the spring.. the new growth should be orange.

I have a question about red ferns. from what we have been reading it seems there rally is no such fern named "red fern" My daughter is getting ready to read the book and one of her assigments was to reseach red ferns and write 4 facts or interesting thoughts about this fern called red fern. so any thing you can assist on would be helpful.
where would this plant grow.. We have seen pictures on of red ferns--or are they?? lady red??

I purchased my first fern this spring and it's an autumn fern. I have it indoors, so I don't know if this info will be of any use to you. It is thriving, so far (knock on wood), in our finished basement. It gets filtered afternoon light through blinds that are closed, but that's it. So they must really like shade. The temp is probably in the mid-upper 60s most of the time. (However I must say it's the only fern that has liked this spot. One Japanese painted fern right next to it didn't make it and a second one almost expired before I transplanted it outside.) I water every other day or so, to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Hi, I can't seem to see any spore development on any of the fronds. This was the most mature of all of them so I took a pic of the underside anyhow, hoping it will assist in the id. The curliness reminds me of parsley. Thanks Tracy

If I can get an answer to the basic question, I may not need to go the photo route I know some plants change appearance as they mature, so can anyone tell me if young Autumn ferns and young Japanese painted ferns should bear some obvious resemblance to the mature plants? If the answer is YES, I've got a problem. If the answer is NO, I'll just be patient.

Hi there! My guess is that it's a variety of Pteris cretica - there are numerous spore-raised forms. We're fortunate to be able to grow them outside here most winters.
