Hi Again, I just noticed your link to the photos. Hard to see what the roots look like as the pics are a bit blurred, but the leaves look good which is a great start. I see also a new growth coming out the side, so possibly something has gone wrong at the top of the plant to cause a new growth to pop out. All new growth on the plant happens at the top and if the top has rotted or the crown damaged the plant no longer grows and usually sends out new growth on the side. If I were you I would hang it up bare root and treat the infected areas on the root using a sterilizing liquid on something like an ear bud works well. I use a product called Physan but possibly a weak solution of bleach will help. The rotted area will not get fixed, but the object is to stop the rot spreading. Definitely don't cut any brown roots with new shoots below. It would be best to water in the morning so all can dry before the day is over. I have no idea in your climate but suspect watering every second day at this stage is too much. In our winters I water once a week with average temps nighttime around 8 and daytime around 19 Centigrade our summers are 14/15 to 28/29C on average and then I water twice a week. The trick is to watch the leaves - they need to stay green as they are now and not get black tips or wrinkles or go a yellowy/orange color. If it starts dropping leaves then it is a shortage of water generally. Not sure if you looked them up, but they come from east asia/new guinea - hot humid climates with forests. So whilst many of the hybrids are a lot more temperature tolerant they do like warmth and filtered sun

Welcome! Your plant is the standard Crassula ovata. With many plants, cultivated varieties (selected for special features) are called "cultivars." With Jades, we often call unique varieties "sports." For example, 'Hobbit' and 'Gollum.' When it comes to Jades, you basically have Crassula ovata and Crassula arborescens ("Silver Dollar Jade"), with the majority being derivations of Crassula ovata. As for the broken leaves....I have had split leaves root, but not all of them will. Fear not, in a few years time you'll have Jades coming out of your ears. Josh

Hi Bernard, I hope I don't repeat something because I only got about halfway through this thread before I got sick of reading and decided to go ahead and post. #1. I don't know where the idea come from that calloused roots are good. Callouses can't absorb water. It's dry scar tissue that keeps in/out moisture, thereby protecting broken stems and so on. When a plant's roots are partially exposed by wildlife digging, etc., the exposed portion callouses to keep the plant from dehydrating, but that calloused portion will never absorb water again. We don't want roots to callous (except maybe Bonsai growers who like to expose some roots over a rock or something). Putting a root system into dry mix is never good for it. I challenge anyone to prove how dehydrating or callousing a root system can possibly be good for it. The previous poster who said the dry mix will dehydrate the plant is correct. Always use damp mix for re-potting a healthy root system. If the roots are dead, it might be a different story. #2. As you've already learned, it's easy to under-water gritty mix. Since it's pretty close to impossible to over-water grit, I'm with the posters who say to soak it deeply and often. If you're paranoid, soak it daily, or even twice daily, but then give the pot a quick, little down-up motion to dislodge any perched water. That way it'll always be just barely moist. If it were mine, and planted in grit, I'd just water every day or two until the roots are well-established. As one who has killed off whole, healthy root systems by under-watering grit (once weekly), I feel confident in telling you that you're extremely unlikely to drown a plant in grit. I'm watering my succulents daily right now, and some are STILL too dry. BTW, Danny, I think mentioned he prefers soil for jades. I don't disagree with him. The one I have in soil has grown much better than the ones I have in grit. Furthermore, the Aeonium I had in a 1:1 soil:pumice mix has a huge, beautiful, healthy root system. The big one in grit has puny roots. These aren't experiments with standardized variables, so something else might be going on, but for now, I'm also not certain that grit is always a better medium.

Hi Rina! Thanks for your reply! About the soil, I don't believe it has peat in it, but it is the soil the jade came to me in. If the stump survives I will not be planting it in the old pot or soil. I will get a smaller shorter terracotta pot and appropriate gritty mix. :) I see now I should have labeled my photos! They are all in order, starting from this morning when the branch popped off and I noticed the brown spots. That's what prompted my research, and subsequently the surgery! The second shows the huge pot it came out of, the third shows one of the dark brown water logged roots. (All of which were cut off). The fourth shows what one of the main trunks looked like after I cut off the initial bit from this morning. The brown/rot got worse so I kept cutting until the flesh looked good. Unfortunately it didnt leave much (the bit you circled). The last 2 pictured show my end result. The wet looking parts at the base of the trunks is from the damp soil. The trunks/base/root ball that is left (the last 2 photos) is very firm. Nothing is soft. I have hope this will survive! I was so excited to have a big jade!
