"Our Fluffy left us this morning, the same way Gldno's kitty left. She was 20 years old, and loved us unconditionally. She was a tiny little cat- she weighed maybe 5 pounds. Great hunter, even in old age; She could and would be the worst nightmare for a rat or mouse. She loved to set under the sprinkler when it was hot. I will miss her so much.

Thanks for posting, even though it made me cry. My DH graduated from high school and promptly joined the navy. He said it looked cleaner than other branches. He was in CA waiting to ship out when the war ended. His Mother told me she was so thankful, as her other son was already "over there". He is buried at Ft. Sam Houston. I had a cousin who was a spy during WWII. He was also with a group that liberated one of the Jewish camps. He once told me it was so horrible that he blanked the memories out for the rest of his life. When he was getting security clearance, some one went to his aunt's house in Vermont. She was hoarding sugar. When the maid told her it was the FBI, she thought that was what it was about. There has been a member of my family in the military in every war, including this one. It's called Microdictyon umbilicatum, and it is a green algae that grows on coral reefs in the sea. I don't really know anything about it, I just thought it was a cool picture. What is a cottage garden to you?

For me a cottage garden is a garden that looks somewhat informal and is FULL of blooms. In my mind, I see Narcissus, Tea Olives, Viburnums, Lilacs, Peonies, Delphiniums, Iris, Foxgloves, Cosmos, Lilies, Lavender, Butterfly bushes, Rose bushes, Climbing Roses, Clematis, Gardenias, Hydrangeas, Hostas, Daisies, Verbena, Black-eyed Susans, Hollyhocks, Dinner Plate Dahlias, etc. etc. set against a white picket fence. Sounds of nature, a soft breeze, birds chirping, butterflies and bumblebees, water flowing and lots of color and fragrance from Spring through Fall. Cute birdhouses, bird baths, stone bunnies, benches, paths. A joyful place, a peaceful place. Like someone said a place that makes you feel happy and a fun project that never really ends. I know what you mean about not wanting a formal, "planned" look and I also understand what Janie's saying. I find having at least a loose plan is helpful. Some things I consider are color combos, height of plants, sun/shade needs and bloom time. I also started keeping a journal. I sometimes forget but for the most part I jot down what I plant and where and when I plant it. It's a wonderful resource and I find myself referring back to it quite often. We bought a new house three years ago and the yard consisted of a weedy lawn, two crape myrtles, a rose of sharon and a juniper. That was it! The first year we started by putting in trees, then planted shrubs and finally last year I began planting flowers. Here are a couple pics. One looking out the front window and one of our side yard. Kennel cough is hard to prevent. We get the boosters every 6 mos. but they still get a little dose of it, sometimes. This time it was a stomach virus though. They are just about over it now, thank goodness, because they have to overnight at the kennel again soon. Kennel cough is sorta like the common cold.....hard to prevent, but you can reduce the symptoms and severity, with the vaccine. The best stuff is the organic cleaner, that gets almost anything out of fabrics, that pets soil, whether carpet, upholstery, etc. Still, I recommend furniture covers for the pieces where the pets typically like to lay, as they tend not to worry too much about where they throw up.

Oh Janie, I am saddened by your kitty's departure.

I would miss my Marmalade very much. We "talk" each night when I go to bed.

More hugs from me, I lost my two old girls within a year of each other so I know how you feel. I know we did the right thing for them but I still miss them. Eventually the day will come when I'll head back to the SPCA for one, maybe two more girls :o).
We still have Basil but he has decided he's DH's buddy, mind you that doesn't stop him from ordering me around.
We are still trying to make an inside kitty out of Basil, he's spending more and more time inside but when or if I get the girls they will definitely be inside kitties with supervised outdoor privileges.

Thank you all for your kindness. I have expected this day for a long time, for she was very old after all, and I am a fairly practical person. I just didn't expect/wasn't really prepared for this day to come so soon. Probably doesn't make a lick of sense...

I love the name 'Basil' too. Also, I think Fionna is a lovely name for a little girl kitty. I will be waiting for my next kitty, as they usually find me, instead of me looking for them.

So, so sorry on the loss of your precious Fluffy. She sounded like a near and dear friend. I lost my 20 year old kitty in February, and yes, I completely understand how it can be expected and still shocking at the same time. It's like I told my little girl before she went, "Twenty years -- it went too fast."

Hugs to you ((Dani)) - 20 years is a remarkable time to have a kitty friend with you.
I will loose it when something happens to my babies. Two have serious health problems and Boo has been through the ringer with them and I can't believe my little black shadow is still here with me today. I can only hope for 20 years. That is a very long time to have a faithful companion and I am sure you will miss her so.

My sympathies, too, Janie. Expected, yes. Ready for it, never.

I planted a little garden on my 18-year-old kitty's grave including some catmint.
