Yes, common names drive me nuts; they seem to confuse rather than simplify the issue. Anyway, what I meant was that you are probably right in identifying it as a tassel fern, but that a tassel fern is not called P. aculeatum. This is the fern I have as P. aculeatum: ... it looks smoother to me, and does not have the brown stems. My tassel fern does look somewhat like Herb's, though the habit is a bit different (it is put aside in a box at the moment during landscaping so I cannot show the habit very well): By the way, Athyriana, you have fabulous photos of beautiful ferns on your website! Sorry, Herb, you didn't even ask for a plant ID but it is always an irresistible challenge.

Hi all: Now I can hardly wait for Saturday. Doris_J: I'd love to get some white Pulsatilla pasque flower, and any Astrantia you can spare. Plantknitter: I'd love to get some of your pink Astrantia and the Epimedium. Bejoy: I'll love to have the Coreopsis Zagreb and some Geum (any kind would work fine.) I'll dig generous clumps of the Cornus--they really took off this year and even gave me an odd erratic flower into August! The Phormium and the Japanese Anemones too made alot of babies this year. Here's a few off the top of my head that might fit the need. I picked some large hostas since you are trying to replace Sum and Substance. None of these get quite that large though. Blue with gold edge: Tokudama Flavorcircinalis - An oldie but goodie Brave Amherst Wooly Mammoth Aristocrat - Very bright These ones have more of a cream to white margin: El Nino Regal Splendor First Frost You can see pictures of these at the hosta library but I would go to the hosta forum on Garden Web and serch for other pictures as well.
