OT: New Camera Lens

I just got my new macro lens and am trying to figure out how to use it. I really need to use a tripod as it's difficult to hold still even with the vibration reduction engaged. There's also not a whole lot blooming to take pics of right now and I don't want to fight my way thru the GH. With my luck I'd drop the camera. lol

Kathy if you are looking for camera equipment check out B&H in NY. I got that lens for $475 which was almost $50 cheaper then I found it anywhere else.

You need a camera that will let you do closeups which are done with the macro setting. My last camera was an older Fuji FinePix and I just replaced it with another Fuji FinePix s1500. I don't know if it's similar with all macro settings on cameras, but on these Fujis, when I use the macro setting, a little flower icon shows to indicate I'm using the macro ;-) There are a zillion places to buy cameras, and all with a zillion settings, but you need first to look into what you want vs what you don't need and that will help you narrow down the selections. I bought my old camera "used" from a camera store, it was a trade-in, had been cleaned up and tuned, so to speak, and I was happy with it. I had it for nearly a decade, but good thing only last so long. I needed a newer camera and knowing what I wanted I did some comparison shopping online and at a few stores. I happened to have been at BJs to pick up some items and wandered into their electronics aisle, found the cameras and read the comparison sheets and bought this new Fuji right then and there. I did have to also buy a separate storage disc which didn't come with the camera, but I'd rather shoot photos and save them on disc and download the disc into the computer rather than downloading out of the smaller built-in storage that is in the camera itself. You need the storage disc because the camera can't hold squat on its own ;-(

Without actually seeing the equipment it is a bit difficult to give you a finite answer, however I can give you some general information that should give you a starting point. When specifying a lens the key information is" 1. Manufacturer 2. Focal Length 3. Maximum Aperture For older lenses that were primarily used on film cameras if you look at the front of the lens you will see the information printed on the ring surrounding the front glass element. The manufacturers name is obvious. The focal length will be a number followed by the two letters "mm", indicating the focal length of the lens measured in milli-meters If it is a "prime lens", meaning it has a single fixed focal length there will be one number - I.E.- 50mm If it is a zoom lense it has an user adjustable range of focal lengths which is indicated by the low & high focal lengths... I.E. 70-210mm The maximum aperture size is indicated by a small letter "f" followed by the number 1 and a colon. Careful here, the number may have a decimal point. For a prime lens there will be one number but for a zoom it will have two numbers, the low one is the maximum aperture when the lens is adjusted to its shortest focal length and the larger number indicates the maximum aperture when the zoom is set to the maximum focal length. By Example a 50millimeter "Normal lens" would be listed something like; Canon 50mm f= 1:1.6 While a Canon zoom lens which can be user adjustable from 70mm to 210mm would be listed something like this. Canon 70-210mm f= 1:3.5-5.6 I shoot Pentax cameras so I seldom pay attention to the type of lens mount because Pentax cameras are designed in such a manner that as each new feature was developed they incorporated it in such a manner that we can still use all previously owned Pentax lenses on the new cameras, but such is not the case with most of the other camera manufactures. Quite often as a new feature such as auto aperture control, auto exposure & auto-focus control was developed they redesigned the lens mounts specific to a range of cameras that had that feature so for most camera lenses it is vitally important to know the lens mount type to insure it will function on the camera you want to use it on. Generally if you remove the lens from the camera or remove the rear lens cap and examine the lens mount you will see a couple letters embossed into the lens mount, such as "MD or MC. Those letters indicate the type of lens mount on that lens and that would indicate what cameras that lens is compatible with. If you could post some close up photos of your camera & the lenses we may be able to offer you more specific information. If we could actually see photos I am sure that there are enough Canon fans here to offer you more specific information. Sorry Mindstrong, you don't know what you are talking about---but I do. The majority of the "big dogs" use Canon. LOL!!!! What "big dogs" do you know? Apparently, they are not as big as you think they are. LOL!! Many National Geographic photographers still shoot with FILM cameras, which are much different than DIGITAL cameras--and they shoot in chrome. And, the ones who shoot digital, shoot with Canon. The archival aspects of the present digital process prevent many photographers from using digital when they don't have astringent deadlines. Sad to say, but, National Geographic photographers are not" cutting edge" by any means. Most are very traditional, which means, NIKON. No "trash talking" here. When the staffs of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe and every other major newspaper use Canon, you know Canons are the best, otherwise, why would they risk shooting with inferior hardware, like the horrible Nikon system? The difference between Nikons and Canon is well documented in professional circles. Ask any "real" professional and they will tell you that Nikon sold-out to the amateur ranks many years ago, that Canons are the best. Most magazine photographers are contract photographers or freelancers and 80 percent of them use Canon. I know what I'm talking about: I'm one of them. Canon digitals are the best in the consumer market too!

Circuit City currently has a nice Samsung 7.2mp camera on sale for $75 with a free printer. Most people do not need all the bells and whistles, as others have pointed out, but the Samsung has a nice collection of features. You actually don't need super-high megapixels if you're not going to make big enlargements, do heavy cropping (like taking only 10% of a picture and blowing it up), or take really, really tight closeups, and very high resolution does chew up the camera's memory and hard-drive space... higher megapixels does not necessarily equate to a better camera. I have a Kodak Easyshare camera and like it very much - it has stood up to quite a bit of abuse like getting dropped, left in the freezing or roasting car, etc. Five years old and operates just as well as the day it was purchased. (It skews a tad to the pink on occasion but if I weren't so dang lazy I could correct that easily, and it has been fixed in later models.) It is a 3.1MP camera and still takes perfectly presentable pictures for my needs - photo sharing here, family/pets snapshots, that sort of thing. Circuit City has the current 7MP model for $100 with a free printer; Best Buy has it for $100 with no printer. Some people really like having the photo printer, we never even used up the supplied package of paper that came with ours and ended up giving it away. If I need hardcopy prints I go to somewhere like CVS or Walgreens for them, since they frequently have coupons for free prints, and get good 4x6 and even 5x7s out of my sorry ole 3.1 even with moderate cropping. ;-) A pawnshop is another place to get a cheap, used digital camera, and you'll be able to get your hands on it before you purchase to make sure it works.

I love cookware, actually anything that belongs in the kitchen, but I have to pick it out myself. I pick most of my gifts out myself anyway. That way there's no issues. I ordered the camera lens and a pair of boots. The only surprise gift was a necklace. Jewelry is just about the only gift that DH is capable of picking out himself. lol

I figured that I should get nice stuff this season because I got him a 73" 3D TV. lol Unfortunately I didn't think to order extra 3D glasses because it only came with 2 and there's 5 of us. Oh well, his birthday's coming up in a few months.

We do that too here. I had to laugh- my husband bought himself 2 nice car books, read both of them, and then wrapped them and put them under the tree! He acted So surprised and happy when he opened them too! LOL!Karyn- what power is that lens? Thanks for sharing!

Kathy the macro is a Nikon (Nikkor) AF-S 85mm f/3.5G ED VR. I also have a Nikon 55-200 mm zoom but the macro takes better and more close up pics. This macro lens is about the strongest this camera can handle. Maybe after a year or so, if I progress I'll invest in a D700 that can handle a super macro but I'm not ready to spend $2500 for a camera body and another $800+ for a lens. Going from a digital point & shoot to the 5000 was a big enough step for me right now. lol Once I become more familiar, if I do, I'm going to look in the pawn shops for equipment. As long as I know what to look for, which I don't at this time, it will save me a lot of $$. You can get really nice camera equipment for a fraction of the retail cost at a pawn shop.

Those are great shots Karyn. Keep them coming. Hopefully in the next few days I can post photos too. I've got a training session at the Apple store on Sunday so I can learn how to download and store photos on this new computer.

Keep an eye out for used lenses at Penn Camera both on line and at their stores in maryland and DC. You can get some incredible bargains, especially if you don't demand autofocus. I just got a 500 mirror lens way cheap because it is not autofocus, but for most of my picture taking I'm old fashioned and like to chose my own focus.

They vet their used stuff pretty well and will take them back if the lens turns out not to work for some reason.
