wound on red ruby grapefruit tree

I have a ruby red grapefruit tree that is about three years old. there is a wound at the base of the tree that was done by a person cutting my lawn. He was trimming with a string trimmer and hit the tree. The wound is getting bigger and I would like to treat the wound. It was suggested by the Nursery to cover it with Elmers Glue. Can you help me with problem. I would like to cover the wound but with what. Thank you

Leave the wound alone.

And to prevent more damage, remove the grass from a nice wide zone at the tree's base -- 20 inches works well.

Hi Ralph! You can keep a citrus tree in a container for a very long time. However, it will need regular root work to prevent the tree from becoming root bound. How long you can keep it in its current container without root work depends on how long it has been in that container. Also, for long term container plants it is best to use a fast draining medium that is slow to break down. Many on the citrus use some sort of variant of Tapla's soil recipes. I've had a Meyer behave that way for me after I bare-rooted into gritty mix in a 19" container. It took 18 months for it to make some moves and finally flush out for me. But I also had mistakenly (for decorative reasons) let it keep a large crop of ping-pong sized fruitlets for a very long time, even though I knew they weren't ripening or doing anything for that matter. I've also had a few other stressed container citrus do the same thing -- doing nothing (visible) until bam! it is healthy again and has come back into balance or redeveloped enough healthy rootage many months later. Well, after carefully mulling my situation over, I am convinced that the two year steady decline of my large tree is caused by either it's age, ( max life span averages 33 - 35 yrs for these trees, mine is about 30 y.o. ), or it has citrus greening. In either case the tree is most likely a goner, so yesterday I had over my two guys to cut it down and plant the new Ruby Red I bought 4 days ago at Home Depot. The following is the pictorial sequence of a sad demise and an optimistic beginning. Am hoping its just an old tree as Wanda said, and the more I think of it ( a dangerous thing for me ), the more I feel she is right. Felt I had to do something, instead of just wasting another year looking at a slowly dying tree. Want to get some Ruby Reds back in production asap. Now hoping I can download the pics. You might not lose your tree but it may never get bigger . Trunk damage is not good . I lost a very nice orange tree that had some trunk damage . It took a very long time for the tree to die . It had a very slow decline and each year the fruit got smaller and the tree never grew any taller .
I finally replaced the tree today with a cold hardy Strawberry guava also called a Fujio guava . A UF citrus expert recommended planting guava in citrus groves . The guava looks so much better than the pitiful damaged orange tree .
