Not being technical, John. Just being accurate. Calomondins were also called Golden Lime, but they aren't limes, either. It is native to the Phillipines and falls within the Citron grouping of citrus (and not the Orange grouping). I think it's good to know about your citrus, and that's what our forum is for - to help pass on information about citrus as we can. And, I didn't refer to the flowers as blossoms. I called them flowers. It's perfectly acceptable to call a citrus flower a flower. The UC Davis Citrus Industry Vol. 2 refers to the flower as a "flower". Good enough for me. And, thinking your comment is pretty technical to me. Sort of like calling the pot calling the kettle black ;-) To the issue for the poster, I would stop pruning, and I would feel very comfortable leaving your Calamondin outside day and night until your temps are consistently below 32. In the ground, the Calamondin can tolerate lower temps as John has mentioned. In a pot, though, is a different situation, as the roots are not protected as they would be in the ground. So, safer to bring your little Calamondin in if temps threaten to drop below 32 degrees. Patty S.

You shouldn't have to prune any of the citrus trees, but if you get a large tree such as a grapefruit or pummelo, then it might be difficult to get the fruit off the top of the tree. I personally would choose dwarf varieties for your situation. Here are the 5 I would choose, trying to keep a variety of both taste and harvest time: 1.) The Fruit Salad tree, just because you said it's one you definitely want...this one may need pruning to keep the tree growing evenly from the different grafts 2.) Moro Blood Orange - my favorite tasting orange, plus interesting fruit color. I ate mine on Christmas in Texas 3.) Mexican Lime - small size, blooms and fruit year-round 4.) Golden Nugget Mandarin - seedless and very late to ripen (like March), so that complements the Honey Mandarin on the salad tree. 5.) Minneola Tangelo - unique flavor to everything else planted I would also strongly recommend tasting these fruits before putting in a tree. Have you tried a Tangelo, and do you like them? Do you use a lot of lemons/limes in cooking and seasoning? Etc. Obviously, don't plant a tree if you don't particularly like the fruit!

Very nice Meiwa Steve! I tried - - - i had a Meiwa for 2 years in the store bought black pot - - - awaiting just the right location to plant it. So i did. Unfortunately that was 2 weeks before the freeze of last December. It was killed complete. During the 2 years it was awaiting planting, i found that it did not like extreme heat (south side of building) but it did push a few fruits... not too bad. I still think the location fits real well for it... but my timing stunk. Maybe i will try again soon. - George!

Sounds like an OK plan to me. Since Vladimir lives in the same zone as you (and a 40 year tree as experience!) I'm sure he'd have much better advice for you than me. I live in a warmer zone (I border 7b & 8a). Some citrus books I've read say the less temperature change for citrus tree to adjust to, the less winter leaf drop (WLD) it will have when bringing it inside, but I'm not an expert on that. I don't think 50 is too early. Last year I moved my citrus inside what I thought was too early, well before the first cold blast, and they did adjust better to indoors than usual, so I may bring them in early this year again. (I also gave them more light). I've let some Calamondins stay out under 40 before with no damage, but where I live the days warm up fairly quickly so they don't have to stay in bitter cold for long. Usually My Calamondin & Owari Mandarins are the last trees I have to bring inside. Having a good sunny window is very important. Sounds like you're all set and I'm sure will do well.
