Yikes! Well, maybe. I'd cut back all the top to only 3 growth buds above the graft and wait and see. Don't over water. Since there will be no leaf for a while, there will be no water take up so watch the water and don't let the soil get soggy.
Also I would not use any more vit. B. It really does not help once the hormones for root production are present, which they are since there is still a tiny bit of root.
Tip for protection from gopher damage. when planting, put a "cage" of wire like chicken wire or stucco wire in the hole then plant in the cage. the wire will rust out in a couple of years but by then the tree will have enough roots that a little chewing will not be as devastating and you will have time to get the gopher out.

Beginning of July I posted a pictures of my poor gopher chewed Lisbon lemon that I just purchased. Thanks to softmentor's advice, I cut the tree to above the graft and continue to water. This time I potted it up and will continue to leave it in the pot - hopefully safe from gophers and squirrels! LOL!

I heard people bury beer bottles with the mouth about ground level and when the wind blows the vibrations are too much for gophers to handle so they make like a tree and leave =P

If you do try to put it in the ground again, here is what I do. I dig my hole just a little extra big. Then I make a cage out of chicken wire or stucco wire. I make it fairly big, so that it will just fit in the hole. Then I plant the tree. The wire will rust away in about 2 to 3 years but by then, the tree will have so many roots that the gophers can't kill it. Of course I still try to get rid of the pesky critters, but I have had good success with the wire giving the tree a chance to get started.

Softmentor, thanks again for your good advice. I actually did make a cage out of chicken wire for my kumquat plant. So far, so good with that plant. Still keeping my fingers crossed as I worry those gophers can still get to the trunk of the plant although I have the cage 1" above the soil. As for this lemon tree, I think I will leave it in the pot as the soil around most of my property is not the best.

Another idea with gophers.

My neighbor has 3 lemon and orange trees that must have been planted decades ago, maybe in the 50's. They are healthy and yield lots of fruit every year.

On close examination, they are planted in the ground in their original contains. The containers appear to be made of old steel, some in wooden boxes. Maybe 2-3 ft in diameter.

The trees vary in height from 4 to 10 ft.

We want to plant a citrus tree on our property. We have a problem with gophers who have eaten the roots of fresh rose plants and killed them. Some have suggested putting wire mesh around the rose root ball to keep the gophers away until the roots have been established. We just tried that with a couple of new roses to see if it works.

Could we protect a new citrus tree (probably a dwarf lemon or orange) from the gophers by simply planting the container in the ground? Our neighbors citrus seem to be doing fine in the old containers.

I can't dig them out but I assume the roots of my neighbors citrus trees have pushed their way through the containers over the years?
