Hello! I am new here, but I also love these lovelies. In Latvian shops unfortunately we don't have labelled Schlums. They are sold as "Christmas cactus" and the shop assistant looks at you weird if you call it "Thanksgiving cactus". I guess it's because we don't celebrate Thanksgiving and not everyone has given a thought about schlums. Today I asked if they know names for schlums they are selling. The answer was no, there isn't any label to see where it has come from so my cacti are NOID, but I have tried to ID some by looking at photos. Today I think I bought "Samba Brazil" *squeals*, I will post photos tomorrow. Today I want to post photos of two I have no idea what they are called. Since files were huge I put links. Perhaps you could play ID for me please? Eggo, do cut palm trunks take a long time to decay? I'm asking because I grew Dragonfruit up mature pine trees. They were doing fine, growing very quickly until the hurricanes hit us and killed the pines. They rotted at an incredibly fast rate, and I had to pull down my Dragonfruit vines. I now have to build a different trellis/support for them. The aerial roots grow into the bark and loosen it from the trees. I'm considering using P/T 4 by 4s, wrapped in thick burlap, covered with wire mesh. The Pitaya could still attach to the burlap and the wire would hold the burlap until more plant growth completely covers it. I'd like an old wagon wheel for the top- am still looking for one or two. Ben, it has been done before. I do not know how many times it must be attempted though to achieve succesful pollination or whether which plant is the mother. These have mostly been attempted to produce large red flowering Hylocereus looking plants. I know of two varieties of the hybrids between Hylocereus and the orchid cactus, one is called "Connie Meyer" the other is "Brunei Red." These two have the growth habits of Hylocereus but with large red flowers.

Also I believe there are about 6 plants of each color in that pot. It is very full and dense. I just purchased 3 variegated ones and have it together to get a similar effect. They have tripled their size already.******************************* Regarding the mixing of colors, if the plants freely reseeded themselves, there's no telling what colors you may get from those pollen combinations. That's why you shouldn't plant different types of mint together, they'll cross pollinate, reseed, the old stuff will die and the babies won't be nearly as good (taste/smell/usefulness) as the parents but will have hybrid vigor and take over all over everywhere. Unless you have it surrounded by a moat of chickens, then you got nothing to worry about as far as any escaping vegetation goes.
