Please Recommend A Dark Red to Climb With Rose Alchymist

Hello! I just planted the climbing rose 'Alchymist' and want to plant a clematis with it. Alchymist is a once bloomer, so I want some interest on the arbor for after it's bloom. It is a large arbor about 7 feet tall and 4 feet across. I want a very dark red! I think a burgundy, red would look very pretty with Alchymist. I am ready to order and am stuck between these: Vino, Westerplatte, Rouge Cardinal, Gravetye Beauty. These are available. Would love suggestions, even if you can recommend another clematis, I'm open. I am pretty new to clematis and am really liking them. I have Nike Warsaw, Carnaby, and Ken Donson. Here's a link to Alchymist at HMF, so you can see the coloring. Thanks!

Rouge Cardinal is the only one on your list that I grow. It is a large grower with lots of blooms. For me, the color is reddish plum. Not burgundy.

Gravetye Beauty is the only one on your list that I have and it, along with Princess Dianna and Etoile Rose, can be mildew magnets in my garden. Using a Neem based fungicide has helped with the issue this summer however.

Gravetye Beauty in my garden is more of a burgundy colored clematis to my eyes anyway.

For reddish colored clematis that do well in my garden, I would recommend either Madame Julia Correvon, Kermesina or even Avant Garde. If you can get a good red clone of the texensis I have, I would also recommend it.

I would recommend Gertrude Jekyll for colder zones. It is very hardy. I don't have too much trouble with blackspot in my no spray zone 5a garden although Lady Emma Hamilton sure gets some. Mary Rose is also good. Rugosa roses such as Pierette Pavement or Foxy Pavement are another alternative. Hardy Buck roses like Earth Song or Country Dancer are also hardy and disease resistant but, like rugosas, do not have old fashioned bloom form. Easy Elegance roses are also disease resistant.

Going along with micahelg's statement, I am growing "America." It is a large flowered climber with high-centered blooms that resemble a hybrid tea. Unfortunately it is not cane hardy. It is too close to a shade tree, and only grows 5'. I wish I could see grow here in a sunny location. The flowers are coral colored and beautiful. I also grow Spectra, another large flowered climber, that I absolutely love. It too has high-centered hybrid tea style blooms. In France I believe it is regarded as a hybrid tea. Mine will reach seven feet tall. However, it is not a Zone 5-A rose bush. I have it in a very protected location that gets full sun but it protected from the wind. Although it gets cold temps, it would mimic a Zone 7 micro climate. The roses in this bed are tremendously vigorous. I also am growing what I believe is Dr. Huey (the common rootstock used for roses) and it puts on a tremendous display. It is a great climber and once was sold in commerce. It is cane hardy.

They had a pink climbing rose at Lowes but forget the name of it. Would have got one but they looked pretty pathetic. I looked on the tag of the 2nd one said it was grown in Canada but it didn't have the name of "Demokracie" anywhere on the tag that was tied with string around the main branch of it. So I imagine like the first one it is the Original blaze. It is doing so awesome the first one. Here is a picture of it. And I found out I can plant the 2nd one I got up against the Wooden Fence like this one only further down. YAY!! Discovered caterpillar or rose slugs not sure which on it anyhow I picked them off and threw them over the fence :) Was on just one branch as you could tell by the leaves. I also removed two that had the leaves like a cocoon with the caterpillar in it so just removed that entire leaf bract and pitched it over the fence. Haven't seen any since on it. I didn't want to spray it as we do have chickadees and chipping sparrows come to our gardens too. Have set up a small birdhouse in it and the chickadee have taken up residence it . They are sooooooo cute.

Among the roses listed so far, only Polka, Westerland, and The Lark Ascending would be hardy in zone 5 and likely to climb to their potential in zone 6. Only Westerland is what I'd call an orange rose - Polka is apricot and The Lark Ascending is a glowing apricot-yellow mix. Others you might consider are Tangerine Skies (I can't yet vouch for hardiness but it's a likely candidate) - the color is a good fit. Odds of having an orange climber get LARGE in zone 6 (i.e. above 8' or so) are a bit iffy, particularly in a repeat bloomer, since that color tends to be relatively infrequent in hardy roses in my experience. You might want to consider something more on the red or scarlet side if that suits your spot. Cynthia

Wow, thanks for posting all the great pics. All of them are very pretty! I think I'm liking Gravetye Beauty. I already have a Neem Program up & running. (VERY fungus & mildew prone here in WA) I'm also thinking to have another Clem climb with them, since the arbor is so big. A double maybe? Proteus or Multi-Blue? I don't have a double yet. There were two Clematis at my house when I moved in. I had never had them before. Now that I have uncovered the mystery of group #'s & pruning, I really like them. I think I have drank the Clematis Kool-Aid. Another obsession coming on........

Remember that Multi Blue is a type II pruning group and Gravetye Beauty is a type III. All clematis should be pruned as type IIIs the first year or so in the ground, but in later years it could pose a problem unless you treat the ones you are growing together as type IIIs.

Proteus is a great double pink. It blooms double on old wood and single on new wood so be careful what you pair it with and its pruning needs.

Well, I am really glad I have new Clematis friends to help me. Your Proteus is just gorgeous nckvilledudes! Is Multi-Blue a type II as well? Maybe I need a red type II to pair with Proteus and Alchymist. Suggestions?

I have another spot for Multi-Blue paired with a double white. Duchess of Edinburgh? I think the blue & white combo would look really good climbing up a bare bottom fir tree in our lawn.

Yes, Multi Blue is a type II clematis. I have Duchess of Edinburg and it has been a real dog for me--few flowers and generally underperforming. But it might do better for you in your garden and your zone. The type IIs do not tend to do well for me in the hot, humid, and dry summers we tend to have in central NC, zone 7a. I always get brown crunchy looking leaves in the summer on them.
