odyssey of my epi flower

Here are a series of photos showing my epiphyllum oxypetalum flower from bud on Aug. 31st to fully open on Sept. 4th. The fragrance was--as I'd read described--very intense. Almost too much so, but the flower was incredible. It began opening up after 9:00 PM and was finished in about 8 hours. How can something so beautiful be so ephemeral? Hope I get more next year, this was the very first after waiting 2 years. (I hope these files aren't too large.)

the wait is worth it, mine have all ready bloomed this year and I can't wait until next spring for more blooms,Oxy are one of my favorite flowers I have 2 large plants that give me flowers for all most of all of June and then again in the late summer, not as many flower in late summer but I still enjoy them, you should get more bloom next year.

Beautiful!! I want to ask a question! My red one bloomed this summer & yesterday I went out & saw 2 red "balls that are on 2 of the dead blooms I didn't remove, they are right behind the long back part of where flower was. Are they seeds? They are over an inch across. This is 1st time I've ever seen that.

Hi..I have been looking at epi's on ebay and just images on the net...I have seen dozens that have the same flower as mine, I guess I have asked a impossible question and questions, sorry, I'll just keep reading... and if anyone should have a all yellow epi and you are going to be pruning it this spring or summer, email me, I would be interested in a couple of cuttings....linda

I bought one at walmart.Rhipsalias Elliptica.A AngelsDelight plant.I was sick and felt bad.It was too 'cheer me up'.I'm hooked on Epis as bad as I am Brugmansias.I'm only ahead in Brugmansias by 8 plants(seedlings excluded).Its not easy to get epis at walmart either. I might need to add 'doghouses' to my GH roof for the epis though..lol I'd love a good look at butterfly.Mines so leggy looking.I hope it blooms this year.

thats one great score, I should be so lucky to find such nice looking plants.I wouldn't worry to much about the heat as much as the sun, I can't say too much about seedlings I'v never had any luck growing epies from seeds, I keep my cuttings and plants under a year in the shade with only morning sun the rest get a little more sun and seem to be happy. as far as giving you any ID on them it would be hard because of so many epies with the same color, but you might check with the epiforum and see what you come up with in the same color and shape of flower.I have lots of unknown epies growing and love the bloom even if I don't know there names.
