Citrus in the City (Boston, to be exact)

Dear All,

I was wondering if I could ask for your collective wisdom. My mother ordered me a dwarf Meyer lemon tree from Four Winds Growers for my birthday this week, and it should arrive late this week. I'm terribly excited and eager to learn, but after about ten hours of reading this forum, I'm starting to wonder if this was a wise choice.

Unfortunately I'm a grad student living in Boston with no car and a small (but very sunny!) studio. Everything I buy has to be accessed and brought home via the bus and then stored in the corner of my microscopic kitchen. There will be a time later in my life when I can throw myself into being a great gardener, and I'm looking forward to learning through a combination of this fora and trial and error, but for right now I just want to keep my plant alive and fairly healthy.

Finding the ingridents for Al's Gritty mix seems neigh impossible, and I've been making calls about finding the proper mulch for the 511 and am getting comments like "I don't think that exists." I've thought about asking my family in Illinois to collect the ingredients for the Gritty mix and then send it to me, but even if they're willing it won't be here before my tree arrives either Thursday or Friday. Any thoughts on how to go about this from people who know the area? Would it be better to return it or give it to someone who can care for it better, or are there "good enough" options that can help me limp through for a few years?

Thanks so much for your help. I've learned a lot from you already as a lurker, and now have extensive notes for taking care of my new tree once I get the potting medium all sorted out.

It will come potted, you won't need to repot it immediately. I haven't used this "gritty mix" and it sure seems to have its fans, but I will tell you that citrus will do just fine in a good conventional potting media like ProMix mixed with sand about 3 to 1, and any garden center of big box should sell those ingredients.

i would be willing to drop enough off to you somewhere locally if you would like. i have plenty already made and would share. E-mail me and we can find out where you will be and if it is close to my area.

Or, are you familiar with the area at all? Are you familiar with the town of Tewksbury, of off 495? Route 38?

You could buy a bag of MG and perlite, since that seems to be the most popular one at the big box stores, and use use a 5 to 2 ratio. In our area, I have had good results with 5 parts perlite and 2 parts MG.

Sad to say, the trees you get from 4winds are always bare rooted and you need to have a mix at the ready when you get it in.
Don't forget once you get your tree to soak the roots for about 30 minutes before planting and make sure to fill in around ALL the roots of your new tree.

No FULL sun for about 2 weeks until the trees gets use to the re-pot.

Toni, Yes, what is more fun than plant shopping? Yes we had a very good time. I assume the Hoop House in NH may be heated? Not sure. They had both colors but we went for the Green Oxalis with the white flowers. The Hibiscus is for me...lol My friend can do the basics so I am trying to make it as easy as possible. I will be able to check on them, especially until he gets the hang of it. As for the help at Home Depot not knowing the info on the plants that are offered, it is so surprising. It’s not like they have to be horticulturists or have such a large variety of plant material. Plus there seem to me to be so many amateur gardeners that are actually shoppers there, you’d think they would try to hire someone like that to have some basic knowledge. It would make it more profitable for them, I would think. Well, we have four HD locally that I have visited, and one of three is better than the others. One is like the one you described. Marquest, yes, I was reminded in the HD that my friend had expressed a liking for Burro’s Tail at one point and they were small inexpensive plants. The Aloe was too cute to pass up and small. I think succulents are just the easiest, to take care of, so I really encouraged him to try a couple of small ones. Thanks for the warning on the Oxalis. It could go home for a few weeks break if need be. Mike, someone on GW recommended Lake Street to me about 3 years ago and I like their perennials, shrubs and selection of annuals. It’s about a 40 minute drive for me and closer than Logee’s in CT. I bought a very pretty variegated Jade Plant there last summer, while shopping for perennials for the garden. I was not sure houseplants were in ready supply, but they had some healthy selections and that is my #1 priority. I would go back. I have noticed they offer classes, although I haven’t found the time to do that. I haven’t been to the Chelmsford Mahoney’s. I see Weston Nurseries has a new location in Chelmsford, too. I got out that way once last summer. Here is the 'Lime Bearss Seedless'..... I'm sure you are right, Toni, that a grafted tree is the best way to go, but this is just an experiment really, to determine if my friend can provide the care. If it goes well, we would probably really enjoy getting a larger grafted plant. And you have me curious about the grafted plants that might be available. Very mysterious...(g)

Hello, I am using CHC because it was recommended, it degrades much slower than pine bark. I have 1/2 inch chips and 1/4 inch chips. The Crystal company sells coir or CHC that has been triple rinsed to remove natural salts. I know that I need to mix this with some other mediums to get the best mix. I used the CHC because it was available through the internet as locals did not have it. I live in New York, about a hour north on the Hudson river, my back yard is oriented south/southwest and it gets plenty of sun but the winters are cold so I have to use containers aside from the fact that I like living things in my house along with my wife and two daughters. I'm really new at this and I'm more than a little anxious about repotting my Meyer lemon and a clementine both of them at least 3-4 ft tall. I hope this helps. Mike, I know what you mean. Just, was it yesterday,?, a little girl of nine, 60-70lbs?? with long, medium brown hair, big, brown eyes was jumping rope, Hop-Scotch, and Hide-and-go-Seek. Today that girl still has long, brown, 'from a bottle,' hair, big brown/green eyes, 5'5, 115 lbs, sits before a computer, 'What's that, mom?,' watching big people tv shows, in a home filled with greens. That 9-yr-old wasn't allowed to keep plants in the 'spotless' house, so instead she went to the store, bought veggie seeds, dug and planted these seeds in the ground. The tomatoes were big, two watermelons, her doggie decided tasted yummy, grew, but she didnt know onions and carrots grew underground, or the corn seeds would grow into tall blades of Horse Corn. :) Mike, I HATE winter, too. SADS. Don't want to step out the door. I'm really trying to be optimistic. It could be worse. We could live in International Falls, MN..their temp was -45..that isn't counting wind-chill. The high here was 4F, tonight -2F. Wonder what the temp will be counting wind-chill. No snow, but it's on its way. One thing about snow..it reflects and brightens the ground, air and our plants. Mike, do you have outdoor perrenials? If so, cut off a branch, and place in water..it'll flower! I had a Pussy Willow..'it grew like a weed, so out it went.' Late Jan, early Feb, I'd remove a few branches, place in water and it'd flower. Magnolias do, too. I'm sure there are other plants, but those are the two I've forced. Flowers might perk you up. Do you grow Snow Crocus? They flower, outdoors, when snow is on the ground..It's not much, but that's all I have to offer. :) Feel better, it could be worse..Toni

The wall color is almost identical to BM Revere , we are very happy with it as we continue to paint the rest of the downstairs with it. Littletown: we love them so far. WE did the deal with purchase of range get 2 free dishdrawers or one free reg. size. WE opted to get two Tall dishsrawers, we wanted integrated so we had to get fisher paykel ones. They are so quiet, I have to touch them to feel if they are running. The fridge is great so far, we had some problems with the place we ordered from, but they are working with us, damage from delivery. I liked it that it was the only sxs that did not have the water dispenser on the front and take up all the space in the freezer (besides built in models). I had a french door before but hated the pit that became the freezer. Which appliances are you getting? I still have not gotten used to all the cabinet space with the pantry. We have yet to fill lots of drawers, of course I have been too sick to really grocery shop yet, so I am hoping that will change

Thank you so much, denninmi. It's nice to know that people have had good luck with a variety of options. Mike is correct that the 3-year-old trees from Four Winds come with bare roots, so I do need to have everything up and running when it arrives. I think it's the 1-year-old trees that come in small temporary pots.

Mike, that would be incredible. There's been a lot of advice posted here, much of it based on the idea you'll be using the gritty mix or the 511. Surely some people can adjust the advice to apply to different kinds of media, but I don't know enough yet to do that. This first stage is going to be by the book. Email coming shortly, and thanks!

Sorry, I wasn't aware that these people bare root their trees. I have only recently heard of them, and just glanced at their web page one time briefly a few weeks ago.

That does sort of change the equation.

Not at all, denninmi. It seems that Four Winds is kind of the exception there. I really appreciate your suggestion on potting mix. If Mike weren't so close by and so kind about sharing his 5-1-1, I'd be doing exactly what you suggest.

Oh, I'm so sorry Olympia; I didn't see your reply. Thank you for the very kind offer! I am all set on the mix for right now, though I'm sure I'll be in need of your advice at some point since you're another zone 5 person. Mike got me started with everything I needed, and then I got a tour of his amazing garden (if my new tree ever looks half that nice I'll be a very happy gardener indeed). Thanks again!
