OK, my life isn't a mess or anything, just a bit stressful right now. I had to buy new shoes. Why is that stressful? Because I have big feet and orthotics. It took me 4 days of searching for hours a day to finally find a pair of shoes that would fit!

That is good, but not the best news!

Last night I taught 35 people to vegetable garden! My biggest class yet! It seemed to go over quite well. For those of you who don't know, I hold gardening seminars and classes - vegetables and especially any kind of growing from seed just about every 2nd week at a local community garden.

The other bit of good news, I am the very first in our community to win "Yard of the Month". The timing could not be more perfect, with my fight to build the garden I want and need with the City here. The paper showed photos and published an interview. It only circulates to our immediate community but that is about 6,000 homes! So if and when I need to exert some pressure, I have some leverage!

Lastly, the nice man who came out yesterday to help me out (from the city, nice people DO work there!!) said that our state is a Right to Build state and it superceeds many of the city based laws - for good or for worse, and that I was clearly being targeted for some reason and have an excellent argument. He looked at the charges for my permits and gasped. They are outrageously unfair. I'm not a vindictive person, but I do believe I have enough fair proof to support our new Mayor in his hopes to change how permitting works in our city hall. It jumped from a place that assists homeowners to a place that regulates and stymies homeowners. I believe in fairness and equality for all in all aspects of life.

Congratulations on all accounts! I can relate to your shoe dilema. I have one foot bigger than the other due to swelling and I would rather take a beating that try to look for shoes that will fit. That's why I love summer. I can go barefoot!

memo and gldno1, thanks for the vote of confidence. Yes, we will be very glad to get the storage and stuff "out of sight"! irene, we are actually building it a little different than the picture shows on that side. We are planning to have a stairway on the outside up to the balcony. To eliminate one long stairway and the room it would take, we will be doing a partial stair going toward the little shed, then a landing and then the remainder of the stair in the oposite direction leading into the far end of the balcony. Does that make sense? Also we are thinking of moving the dormer closer to the front end of the garage, which would be off center, but as the small shed will be at the far end of the garage, the dormer would end up centered between the shed and the porch on the house. Again, does this make sense visually to you? Thinman, yes, the house is considerably wider. We had considered the 10/12 pitch too and drew it up both ways. In fact DH is going to measure the height of the peak of the house this weekend to see what it actually is. Your calculations were almost the same as what the builder gave us. Our thoughts were the additional 1 1/2 +/- feet of total peak height was not that important, but the headroom at the side was. With the steeper pitch, we would not have to cut the inside stairway up to the second floor quite as short with the landing and turning the final part of stairway for head room.

Do I need to Change Freon if I'm having a new Coil installed?

Hello sorry I still have questions regarding this install. I don't think i made myself clear that my entire system in not being replaced only the furnace and evaporator coil. The actual AC unit outside is the original Lennox. The furnace they're installing is a Carrier. They're telling me i need to replace all of the Freon for the reasons below. This doesn't sound right. please offer your opinion thank you! This is an email response from the HVAC company explaining why they need to replace all of the freon. "Unfortunately we won't be able to use existent refrigerant due to the old oil mixed up with new refrigerant-non condensibles and acid build up inside refrigeration cycle. Since we installing new evaporator coil and new gas furnace we will be responsible to cover any repairs for the new equipment installed by our company. We will recapture and recycle existent freon. After we will finish install of a new equipment we will add new clean refrigerant . Remaining balance still stays the same $ 1852.00"

Ah, the shoes arrived today and fit like a glove.
My problem is, I can't shoe shop "in person" here - they only have fancy shoes in one store here in my size. I don't need any more fancy shoes, that's for sure! Proudgm, these Clarks are mary janes with two rows of straps that have long elastic so they can account for swelling. I will say they are much narrower than the other Clarks I just sent back. My feet are very narrow except that the orthotics are not. Another conundrum!!

IT IS SNOWING HERE! We already have an inch. Back to boots!

Great news on both fronts. Maybe you can fight City Hall!

Funny you are talking about feet and swelling. I am sitting here with my left foot propped on a pillow under the desk. It is swelled twice the normal size. My sweet cow stepped on my foot....she weights 1200 lbs.

'Right to Build' - I like that idea. Ontario also stymies people who build things, although when I see some of the stuff they approve, I think they need to get tighter! So, will your charges be reduced?

Nancy, who loves Clark's, but need orthotics for them.

I'm not a big one for the "right to build" that needs to be limited in Cities, and needs to have some city planning insite. If everyone paved everything here, we'd be in a huge conumndrum - which is what is happening. Folks like me with low laying property are getting flooded out by folks who are super sizing, McMansioning, ginormous garage building and paving everything in site!

Ouch, gldno1!!! A foal stepped on my foot years ago and lord was it painful. I can't imagine being stepped on by a 1200lb cow.

GGG I too have orthotics and problem feet...very narrow except for my bunions and now my 2bd toes are "hammering" so they hit the top of my shoes....I end up wearing running shoes or open sandals all the time. I am glad you have good news on several fronts !!

Congratulations on the Yard of the Month! Does that newspaper have a website, so we can read about it? That's exciting news!

And I share your problem of finding comfortable shoes for big feet. I just ordered some size 11 from QVC. I have toe troubles, so mostly like to wear open toe shoes. I was wearing a 10 in sandals, but sized up for enclosed shoes. Most stores around here don't carry any over size 10. I love Clarks too.

girlgroupgirl~I have orthotics and big feet too, so I buy men's shoes, New Balance fit me well. I love Mary Janes, saw a pair of Clarks online that fit that description, saving my pennies for them! Are they as comfy as they look?

I won our neighborhood beautification award last year, it sure was nice to get a bit of recognition and encouragement.

I don't really know if I have a 'cottage garden'. Everyone is so friendly here that I just decided to post!

I can't wear men's shoes because my feet are VERY very narrow. Clarks vary in width quite drastically. I have some of the more "constructed" ones right now. The Privo are expensive and very wide. I do not find the Privo have enough support at all. I like the styling a lot, but found they also did not wear well for me, and were not the quality I expected for the price. Especially compared to other Clarks styles.
I bought mine at Endless.com and they were only available there (the style, in particular) and were about $30 cheaper than elsewhere. Not all of the items at Endless are such a deal, but these were! They have lots of larger sizes!

GGG - I just have wonky feet - bunions, Freibergs cysts, stuff like that. I love Birkis and wear Crocs a lot. I find Clarks really don't give me enough support especially when I am putting mileage on. If if could afford them, I would buy Mephistos - they are amazing. I had a pair once, and they lasted almost forever!!
