Is this really a hybrid, or just a varietal clone? For example, I have A. bovicornuta 'Reggae Time', which is not a hybrid, but a variety (clone) of the species.

I'm guessing this one is as hardy as parryi, which can handle lows in the 15-20 degree F. range. In your zone, most Agaves are probably not going to survive the winter unprotected.

The producer of this plant, Proven Winners, states:
"A striking hybrid that forms a tight head similar to cabage with leaves that impress each cupped leaf firmly on its enclosing mate in a beautiful pattern. The leaves grow up to one foot long and are blue-green with teeth."

I know they won't survive without protection. I have many Agave, Yucca, Echinocereus, Escobaria, Opuntia, and one Echinocactus species that survive my winters quite well with nothing more than gritty, well drained soil and a cover from fall to spring to keep out precipitation. I'm curious if this hybrid will do well along with the rest of them, which is why I'm interested in knowing the second hybrid parent. You may be right, it could be a varietal selection. I've contacted the Proven Winners company but also wanted to check here and see if anyone knew offhand.

For anyone who is interested, the company who produces this plant got back to me. 'Retro Choke' is not a hybrid but a seedling selection of A. parryi var. truncata. So, it should be worth a shot for us zone pushers!
