Need honest opinions

There is a very large tract of land that adjoins the large properties of two of our neighbors. The large tract is accessible from a main thoroughfare a few miles away (not accessible through our private road neighborhood).

Those two neighbors in this neighborhood have been fighting the development of the property through the legal system. They have legal bills that are now in excess of $100,000. They keep holding "fund raising" parties in their homes and invite just us neighbors. They aren't looking for $20 or $50 donations, they are looking for thousands of dollars in funds from the neighborhood.

Yes, it's unfortunate that the land is going to be developed. However, there is a very large wooded buffer and there's no way we'll ever see this property from the neighborhood unless you go up on a hill and walk through the woods behind the homes of these two neighbors.

My DH and I didn't hire the lawyer, so we don't quite understand why our neighbors are expecting the neighborhood to help pay the legal fees. It's getting very awkward as we really like these neighbors personally and always have a wonderful chat (about other things) when we see them.

Both neighbors live in million+ homes. One neighbor has vacation homes in two other states. The other neighbor has a timeshare vacation home in another state. One is retired, but still travels all over the world (to places like Russia, Australia, etc.) as a consultant for businesses. The other is a prominent medical professional.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Cameron
