Meyer lemon vs Eureka Lemon, taste?

Any opinions from anyone who has tasted both fruits as to which tastes better? Which is better for lemonade? Which tree looks more ornamental? What is the mature height of both trees in a standard version (not dwarf)? I will be growing the tree in Orange County, California. I had a Eureka on a former property and it made beautiful fruit, but I don't have any experience with a Meyer.

I would think the Eureka would be better for lemonade, as it's going to have more a that "lemon" flavor. The Meyer, my favorite, is a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange. I swear, you can eat the pulp, it's sweet enough. I love them.

The Eureka lemon is one that STIRRINGS, the cocktail mix maker, makes it "Lemon Drop Martini" mixer out of. And it has a very lemony flavor. The Meyer is just on the other side, with that mandarin mixed in, which I love.

Williams-Sonoma makes a Meyer Lemon Martini mixer, made with Meyer Lemons, and it's my favorite. When talking via email to the people at STIRRINGS, I questioned why they only marketed a "Lemon Drop" mixer and not a "Meyer" mixer, as Meyer lemons are becoming quite popular as of late (I have two new trees myself). I was surprised to learn that STIRRINGS actually makes the Meyer Lemon mix that Williams-Sonoma puts their name on. I wrote them back and told them they should reconsider and mass-produce the Meyer for others rather than Williams-Sonoma and distribute the mixer in all the places STIRRINGS seem to be available, as a trip to the mall to buy mixer can be a rather daunting task. Our Williams-Sonoma is in the mall, and whenever I go, I stock up on this wonderful elixir. But making a special trip to get it, as I said, can be quite a challenge...what with the mall traffic and all.

So after all that rambling...I would say the Eureka probably would make the best lemonade, but the Meyer would make a "special" lemonade that would make your guests say "Mmmmm.....what IS that?"

...These STIRRING mixers may EXCELENT marinades. Just add your choice of herbs, whether it be garlic (highly recommended), rosemary, thyme, and marinate chicken breasts (bone in or out) overnight and you've got an extremly flavorful piece of meat on your hands.

Take the leftover marinade from the plastic bag, put it in a small saucepan on the stove and boil about 3 minutes. Take it with you to the grill and baste. Extra flavor! Or even use the boiled mixture to pour over the finished grilled chicken breats as a dressing!

What are sweet lemons? I have never heard of them. If the others are "regular lemon shaped and very large and yellow", then they are not Meyers. Meyer lemons themselves are very sweet, as they are believed to be a long ago cross of lemon and tangerines. You can tell they are Meyers because their skin is very soft, and kind of hard to zest, unlike regular store lemons, and they are rounder without such a point. Their skin and flesh are also more golden than yellow. I can't tell you what you've got because I have never had to buy one in the store, as my Grandfather's house in the Coachella Valley desert (aka Citrus Central) has a tree growing creme-de-la-creme Meyers, plus I have one of my own, which aren't quite as good as his, but I'm sure much better than those you get in Canada. Meyers Lemon was introduced to USA from Asia and later found to be a symptomless carrier of the citrus virus Tristeza. This does not affect Meyers Lemon in any way, but can allow the disease to be passed on by aphids to commercial citrus varieties which are affected. The virus can be eliminated by various laboratory procedures such as heat treatment and shoot-tip grafting. Clean Meyers Lemon was propagated on a large scale in, I think, the 1960's and all old line Meyers should have been replaced with the new 'Improved Meyers Lemon'. Certainly, no old Meyers should now be sold in the USA. There is no difference between 'old' and 'improved' Meyers (apart from the lack of Tristeza). They are the same variety.

I have read most of these post...yet I still do not seem to see an answer for me...I have lemons, maybe a handful that have been growing for almost 10 months! and still are green as grass....Are they ripe? Can I eat them? Or do I need to just say "Hey, it will take a year and a half to get a yellow lemon?"..it is for sure a meyer lemon plant..*sigh* Oh I live in mid to north Georgia..Highs are low 90's and cools are 68ish..

Meyer, Eureka and Sambo Lemon Trees

When I moved to FL one of the top items on my to-do list was own a lemon tree. Other citus trees are readily available. but oddly enough, it took me 3 years to find a lemon for sale locally. So, when I found a Sambo Lemon tree, which I'd never heard of until that day, for sale at a Lowes a couple of weeks ago (Oct '07), I jumped on the purchase without hesitation, even though it was sold in a 3 gallon pot marked with a 5 gallon price tag. I found limited online information on Meyer trees being suitable for indoors, but nothing on indoor Sambos. My question is how do I best care for my Sambo lemon tree? I live in a condo with the only outside spot facing north, under a 6' overhang. The other alternative is indoors at a southern facing window. 'Sammy' is about 5.5' tall, very healthy looking, the graft is some 6" above the soil. Sammy is bearingno lemons. I'm hopeful for next season! On a side-note, lemons sold at the local markets in Tampa are typically shipped in from California, or even South America, and I pay literally 6 times as much for a lemon here as up north. Fortunately, I've befriended locals with large trees on their lawns! These fresh lemons are SO much tastier than any I've ever purchased at a market. :) Here is a link that might be useful:
