No rush, Make decisions on how big you want the tree. If you plan to put it out for the summer, start acclimating it to sun light by placing in broken shade starting about 1/2 hour and increasing by 1/2 per day. Seeing your in zone 5 you'll probably want to do this at the heat of the day. Once the tree is out side it will probably branch out on its own. If you got an instruction packet with the tree, follow them very closely. Take your time, others will have specific advice pertaining to lemon trees. They're fungus gnats. I think they're more a nuisance than a real problem. Not sure of best way to eliminate them. Somebody here on this forum probably has a relatively non-toxic remedy. I suspect spraying with horticultural oil, or Neem, will control them effectively without making your fruit toxic. The oil kills by suffocation, not poison. Just spray the soil surface thoroughly, and I think your problem will be over.

Wow, I can't believe a tree that small can bare the size of the fruit. My tree was purchased at a local nursery at 1/2 price (end of season sale) and I have concerns. The bottom of the root ball was a blunt cut off stalk. I thought that was weird. The roots were few and it was planted in what seemed like hard clay. I tried to loosen it without damaging too many roots, so I conditioned my soil and planted it. I hope the roots will be able to grow out. Is this normally the way the rootball of this type of tree would look? I hope they weren't just trying to get rid of it.

depends on how small you want it would be best as a larger bonsai as the fruit are huge, they may even break some of your branches if you want to do it without the fruit it could work too, but again best if done large cause the leaves can get pretty large too. My suggestions would be to use calamondin, kumquats or key lime. something with a smaller fruit and leaf. good luck
