question about keeping cuttings in water over winter

Could you guys tell me what you think about keeping brug cuttings just in water for the entire winter. I wouldn't think it would be a problem except maybe a rootball the size of my head~~ :) ~~ I just don't have the sunshine to pot up but so many of them. Please give me your thoughts.

I leave them in the buckets until late Apr, early May. I don't have room for all those pots inside. They do fine once they are transplanted. The roots do get to be a mess but the plants don't seem to be negatively impacted buy having some of the roots snapped off. I usually end up pinching back the foliage that has developed over the winter anyway. It's much weaker then the foliage that grows when they are outside and they usually burn up the minute the sun hits them, even indirect sun.

My garden is on the border between zones 5b and 6a. I have used shredded oak leaves for years to winter protect. I put rings around the roses and fill the rings with shredded oak leaves (10-12 in. high for large roses and 5-6 in. for minis). I don't use anything else to mound them up first - just the shredded oak leaves. I almost never lose a rose to winter or find canker problems. I do not have a soggy mess in the spring. My experience says it is a great way to winter roses if you are sure you are using oak leaves and you have shredded them somewhat before using. In my early years of growing roses I sometimes used other types of leaves, and often didn't shred them before using. That was not a good idea. One year I lost every rose in one bed, and other times I lost more than I was happy with. Just use oak leaves and shred them somewhat before using. They don't have to be turned to dust, just chopped up some. Turning every leaf into maybe 6 - 8 pieces gets the job done (no, I didn't use a scissors and count the pieces - it's just an estimate). :0)

Cutting the leaves help to force the banana into hibernation. The leaves help the plant to produce energy when it's warm and sunny. Cutting these off helps to cut down on energy consumption when the plant is stored. I do like to leave on the banana, the pointer stem, or new leaf that has yet to unfurl to give the banana a head start when I plant it outside again in the spring. Do not water the bananas when storing in this fashion. Again, you want the plant to hibernate. The banana will draw it's minimal energy from the corm which is the bulb like structure that the roots form from. You can however cut off all the roots, taking care not to cut up or cut off the corm. As for newspapers, I don't use them. Some people may, but only to prevent dirt from getting on the floor.

I believe the general rule with container plants is that you should consider conditions in an exposed container to be 2 zones colder than in the ground. Unless boxwood is hardy to zone 4, you should bury it in the ground (pot and all) for the winter or find some other way to protect it. I don't have any experience with celosia. I assume it is a tropical plant but I don't know if it normally lives beyond 1 season. If not, there isn't much point to bringing it in!

Last year (I was living just out side of Golden, Colorado) I thought I had lost all my worms to the cold. We had an early freeze and I was not ready with the heat for the worms. I just left them after I thought I had lost them and we moved to Pueblo Colorado during the summer. (But I kept the castings) Once I set up a new home for the worms I found out I had live worms. I thought that they were all dead but I was wrong. Just luck or hardy worms? I donÂt know but that is just one case where they did make it. I would check them about 2 to 3 weeks after the last frost you might have some alive. I also know that there is a worm farmer up north (I think it is Montana) who grows worms out side in windrows. He freezes the top to help some heat in. Hope this helps Rick

Thanks Mike and Karyn . I have the bubbler going, but I also have some smaller cuttings in glasses. My set up on the bubbler makes it kind of difficult for short cuttings. So I probably need to work something out and get rid of the glasses. Maybe a pot with holes to kind of hold them up out of the water ..at least to the depth that I want them at. These are my new ebay brugs, so I sure don't want to loose them. Some of them I potted up as soon as I got them without rooting them, and they are doing well. But the big problem is...where the heck to put all those pots!!

I went to the dollar store and bought a few cheap shelving units to put in my dining room to hold my potted cuttings near my only window in the house that gets some sun. There is room for about 8 quart size pots on each shelf so it should work fine for me I hope. I can't figure out a way to do the smaller cuttings to stay in the bucket either.

I have a millon(well just 1/2 million):) cuttings in 5 gallon buckets,they have always done just fine that way,come early spring they go to the yard.I have had some in the buckets 4 days they have little nubbies,the orange just went in 2 days ago and I noticed that they even have little nubbies when I went to get cuttings for someone who wanted the orange. That is all except my Peaches & Cream,she sits by my bed.Bonnie

Bonnie, You crack me up !! Peaches and cream by your bed LOL . I have one small p&c plant, and took two small cuttings to give someone and they are on "deaths door". I have done everthing in my power to keep them going. I am a critical care nurse and with all those skills....I am loosing my patient !! LOL Help code blue

ednam,I to was a nurse on stepdown,I guess that is why I have it by my bed,that is where I spent most of my time at work.So I keep it close,further more I just can't cut on this one and"she"is about 4 foot tall with about,6 or 8 limbs,my sister wants some of it but I promised her a broke arm if she touched it,LOL,keep on Brugging,and smiling :) Bonnie
