Help With Improved Meyers Lemon! Dropping Leaves and Blooms
Comments (6)Hi SeanPez, Are you sure that you're getting enough water to the roots? I'm not familiar with a deep root irrigator and its rate of water flow, but a couple minutes once/week sounds awefully small given what a dry winter we've had this year in CA. Also, did you apply fertilizer at all since planting, or were you hoping to do that during the coming growing season? What fertilizer will you be using and how frequently? Just to give you some idea for comparison, here in SF (where we generally get more winter rains than you guys - though maybe not this year!), the first year I planted my in-ground IML I was applying 5 gal 2x/week by hand. Then the next year, I decreased to 5 gal/week, and the 3rd year (this year) plan to do 5 gal every 2 weeks, with the eventual goal of 5 gal every 4 weeks. Remember, citrus like a DEEP watering with rest in between. My fertilizing regimen is GreenAll Citrus & Avocado fertilizer (which has all necessary micronutrients of Fe, Mg, Mn, etc.) 3 times per year, during Feb., May, and Sept. according to box instructions. During the IMLs' 1st year in the ground, I also applied Miracle Gro's Rhododendron, Camellia, Azalea (liquid) fertilizer every 2 weeks, since citrus are very heavy feeders. BTW, I also noticed that you don't have mulch around your tree. Given So CA's dry conditions, I would suggest doing so; but keep the mulch (2-3 inches thick) at least 6 inches away from the bark. Comments (10)NOTE: I do not grow these in pots so please take my opinion(s) with that in mind. I have two Meyers outdoors and in the ground that looked like this the past summer. The leaves got yellower and now have classic salt toxicity / yellow tips. The good news is they are starting the spring flush. In my case it was too much fertilizer. I have been flushing the ground with massive amounts of water and am hoping they will continue growing and completely recover. Because you used organic fertilizer, I believe the risk of over-fertilization is lower. However, since you stated that water drains out quickly, I suspect the roots may have dried out with too much fertilizer around them. My experience has shown these plants need very small amounts (much less that the fertilizer package states). Keep in mind that symptoms of under nourishment are identical to over-fertilization. Too much fertilizer kills roots... and without roots, the plant cannot get the nourishment. Again, my experience is in the ground and not in containers.... I wish you good luck!...See MoreSharing a picture of my HUGE Meyer Lemon
Comments (6)CLM...Citrus Leaf Miners. Almost all our citrus trees here in FL both inground and potted have them. Luckily once the tree gets mature and more established it doesn't seem to affect the fruits. The leaves are very unattractive(ugly, really). There's nothing I can do...I treat it and in a few months it comes back...its a losing battle. Now, basically I just trim it and let it do its thing. I know what you mean...I trim it and it grows again, I've noticed that the only time it stopped is once it flowered and fruited. I guess because now the energy is going to the fruits, at least to me it makes sense? Hi Mike :o) How are you doing?...See MoreMeyer Lemon healthy lemons dying branches and no leaves
Comments (7)Oftentimes, the damage caused by over watering cannot be 'fixed' by drying the soil out. Planting into a VERY coarse, rapid draining potting mix can go a long ways in preventing problems in the first place, even for those who tend to be chronic over-waterers. LOTS of us are guilty of this at some point, lol! Using a great deal of perlite, bark fines, and/or Turface (for example) insure that you'll have plenty of large pore spaces in your potting mix to promote the essential water drainage and a constant oxygen supply required for healthy root growth within a container. Please know, too, that moisture meters are notoriously inaccurate....See Morebettycbowen
