How long before I give up on Metasequoia seeds?

I have dawn redwood seeds in EVERY kind of mixture around the house now. Even regular dirt! The first of them I got off ebay have been in their various mixes for about 3 weeks (Since Dec 29th). My plan has been to let them go for a month then dump them out. This sound about right?

If viable, metasequoia seeds should germinate in two weeks or less. You could wait a month to be safe, but definitely not any longer. The ones I sent you I've germinated recently, you shouldn't have any trouble. Let me know how they're doing, and when they come up, if you will.

I agree. All of my seed germinates by two weeks if it is going to at all.

How nice of you Kathy to take the time to post those pictures. I can only think of twice I've ever had this problem in the past (one was on a rose from Spring Hill- which is 'nuf said for most people). Consequently, I really hadn't given much thought to doing anything differently then I had in the past. But this year has been different as we are in the middle of a severe drought, very unusual for our springs, and although the rains aren't here the typical Oklahoma winds are (along with yo yo temperatures - today it was 87). After I read your e-mail I went out and sprayed my canes with water. I do see some new leaves beginning to sprout on one, and if I squeeze my eyes real tight and concentrate I think I can see swelling buds on the other (or maybe it's wishful thinking). I hadn't thought about the dry wind factor, so now I'll make sure to keep the canes moist ..Thanks again, Maryl

This late in the season, I would strongly discourage you from mounding your plants with soil (especially when considering the atypical weather patterns in your area this year, plus the length of time the plants have already been in your garden). Your question about how long to wait deserves an answer, so I venture to offer this: If you've seen no signs of life by the summer solstice (that's 2 wks + 1 day from now), it's a virtual certainty that your BPIs are goners. That gives them a full month in your garden -- and that's a full month under conditions that were less than ideal to begin with, and are becoming less hospitable with each passing day. What was the source of your bareroots? Were they shipped to you by a recognized supplier, or did you purchase them locally? Whatever the case, if they don't break dormancy very soon, I feel you have grounds to request a refund. I hope you'll keep us posted. We're wishing you good luck with those two . . .

Heavenlyfarm, I'm fairly new to africian violets myself. I first bought a NOID plant from my local Lowes and then I began to look for other plants online, thinking I could find other plants that were much more unique in there ways. Now, I'm a very active eBay user and buy and sell all the time. So back in July I bought 4 leaves from a seller and I didn't have any problems what so ever. I received the leaves in 3 days and within three months I finally got babies and there gradually getting bigger. Like I said, violets are new to me but I've been raising orchids for eights years. Now if you want to learn to be patient, go after orchids and they teach you that. But to each our own. The whole orchids began when I bought my wife one for Valentines Day and then she began to want more, and now it's an obsession. We presently have a dozen different orchids, which is actually down from 18 which were given as gifts to others within the family looking to try there hands at orchids. Anyways that's more for the orchid forum, I will continue to learn new info from these forums and because it's a joy to read about other peoples experiences. Dan

I think Catopsis was just being facetious calling it a terrible plant. I do agree with him that the flowers should be cut off unless you want to collect seed. The same goes with D.spathulata and most self seeding Drosera. A massive pot filled to the rim of D.capensis is an awesome sight. However, a Sarracenia pot filled to the rim with D. capensis is a pain in the backside. The ease with which it grows and propagates via seed and root cuttings is a bit of a mixed blessing, especially if have a large collection. I've even had capensis seedlings coming up in the middle of a bowl of U.gibba. Andrew

I never try and germinate mine indoors. Is that you all do it? I grow them commerically, but all of the redwwods get the same treatment, they get shown in trys and left out side in the winter. Our temps only get as low as 19 degrees.

I just found one of my dawn seeds germinated from the wet paper towel tonight. I was excited. I would agree with everyone else that a month should be plenty of time. By that time, there'll probably be plenty of fungus and mold surrounding them...

Trust me Sequoia, when they come up I'll be all over the forum!

I have a decent mix of methods going on, both upstairs and downstairs in my house. If any seem to work quicker than another I'll let you all know.

It's not getting sewn too deep, is it by any chance? Sould be just barely below the soil surface, perhaps a mm or two. I now have a vested interested in getting these d#mned seeds to germinate. You need some more I'll send you some more but for god's sake I'm hoping these BETTER come up. They're perfectly good. You sew any of those cupressus glabra seeds I sent, too? They will need some cold strat, maybe sew em in pots and place 'em outside in early march. I figured slight chance you may not be interested but what the h#ll.

Yup, I divided those into 6 groups. Have some in the fridge, some in the garage, some in the basement. Maybe I'll move half those in soil in the basement into a covered spot in the garden. Thanks again!

Oh Sequoia, I still need to pm you my address so you can send me some of those cupressus glabra seeds. Sorry again toronado!

Anyway, I used to always have a problem with soil depth. So now, I just use a little vermiculite and just barely cover up the seeds.

Hey Toronado, Metasequoia seeds need no stratification. Figured you were probably just storing them there but just wanted to let you know just in case. They'll most likely just get moldy if put in soil in the fridge.
