HELP!!! My Grapefruit Tree is very sick.

I am a new homeowner and I do not know the first thing about citrus trees as I am from Northern Ohio. I can send other pictures but the tree has a green mold on it with white spots and has lost a lot of its leaves. I do not believe this tree has had much care in a while. Where do I begin. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Whitish specks on the upper surface of leaves and dark spots varnish-like on the bottom are symptoms of Rhododendron Lace Bugs, Stephanitis rhododendri, and Azalea Lace Bugs, Stephanitis pyrioides, small insects with transparent wings on under-surface of leaves. This insect hatches early in spring as the new foliage begins to mature and its numbers may build to damaging levels with successive generations. Lace bugs reach their peak in late summer and do their worst in sunny, exposed sites. Spiders are important predators of lace bugs and since they shy away from sunny, hot places, plant your azaleas where there is some shade. Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or a systemic insecticide may spare your azaleas the damage if applied in spring when the first hatchlings are noticed. Care must be taken to spray the lower surfaces of the leaves where the lace bugs live. Moving a plant to an area with more shade may alleviate the problem. Lace bugs are more prevalent on certain varieties. The following azalea cultivars have resistance to azalea lace bug: 'Dawn,' 'Pink Star,' 'Ereka,' 'Cavalier,' 'Pink Fancy,' 'Dram,' 'Seigei,' 'Macrantha,' 'Salmon Pink,' 'Elsie Lee,' 'Red Wing,' Sunglow' and 'Marilee.' Well, you need to fertilize regularly, 3 to 4 applications from February through about September in your area. Be sure you apply the fertilizer at the drip line (edge of the canopy) and not at the trunk. Water your tree well, apply the fertilizer, then water in. Sprinklers should not be hitting your tree at all, you should have your tree on micro-sprinklers pointed out away from the trunk, and spraying out at the drip line. Prune out any dead wood from inside the tree (this is not unusual for older citrus to develop dead wood inside the canopy), and prune very lightly for shape. If the tree is getting too tall, drop crotch prune your tree to bring down the height (Google drop crotch pruning, and you'll see how it's done, or call a GOOD tree trimming specialist and ask them to drop crotch prune your tree to bring down the height). Painting the trunk with a 1/2 strength flat white latex house paint in your area is a good idea, due to your intense sun. Patty S. Here is a link that might be useful: Citrus in AZ

You've got bugs......try Bayer All In One for Rose and Flowers. It's systemic and will kill anything that eats your flowers. It also has fertilizer so will give them a boost toward regrowth.

Yes, sadly, I do think you have this disease. Your tree has all of the tell-tale signs of Citrus Greening and should be removed as soon as possible because infected trees are the source of further infection to healthy ones in your area. It is a responsibility of all citrus growers to other citrus growers to remove infected trees as soon as possible. In my opinion, the best plant/garden/agriculture resource available to Floridians is the University of Florida (UF) IFAS Extension EDIS (Electronic Data Information Source). It has over 4,000 publications. Here is a link: UF IFAS Extension - EDIS I have now lost three citrus trees in my backyard and two incredible ones in my mother's back yard. I have not replanted citrus after these losses as after 3-5 years, we repeat the process. I have great hope to replant one day! I would prune out all dead limbs to get the clutter out of the tree.so to see what you got. Tap on the bark where the whit spots and mold are and tap where it is not. If it sounds hollow you have a problem, but if it is firm then the mold and white spots are harmless. Ny guess it is starving for fertilizer and just needs feeding. Remove any crossed branches and brances that aim back into the center and or cross. It wont die tomarow so wait to see what other have to say

Tree is to clutter and needs to have weaker branches removed. The green mold and white spots are harmless.

What may have happened is the tree may have gone unwatered for a long period of time, maybe neglect for 2 or 3 years. That can kill back parts of the tree, and it may never be able to fully recover again. If that is the case, the best thing you can do is try to give it proper care now.

Make sure you keep it watered during the summer.

OP never responded after he said an extension agent would be here tomorrow. My conclusion was the tree with all its crisscrossing long slender branches had to much cambium to feed for the leaf quantity of the canopy.

New citrus tree growers see threads like this and can learn even though it is 7 years old. When I first started I spent a year reading old threads as well as new threads before I started my first citrus tree. The reading proved quit valuable for my success rate and learning curve.
