Your clematis are beautiful and healthy!! Thanks for sharing all of the pictures. Next year will be the third year for some of mine, so I'm hopeful that some will look as full as yours by then.

GREAT pix. Can we see a pic of the trellis now, without anything? (A long shot, to see how it's made?) I like the Niobe with the dead magnolia. Did that one take a long time to establish? I thought Niobes had a hard time competing with anything else. Did you plant it before or after the magnolia died?

Hi Laura (seventowers6)- I hope you are still checking on this thread you started in 10'05 - just last May H Depot had a bunch that was brought in as a fundraiser for 'childrens' cancer cure' I purchased 3 (in bloom) as Hines claims her to be z5 hardy there was not much info on the tag except for the very alluring color changes on both blooms and foliage and that she was a Mac/serrata cross. I'm so glad to see your posted photos, many thanks!!! It would be wonderful to hear from your adventure with her this past season - rate of her growth, overwintering efforts you had to do for her etc. I realize that you are a notch or so higher than my zone. 'I would very much appreciate you response!!! I too went through some rough times in July as we had 2 weeks of heat wave - all three limped out quite a bit but I babied them and all 3 faired well after. Planted in 2 diff locations in the yard, 1 in an ideal E-exposure with dappled shade. 2 in W-facing foundation strip under eaves also dappled shaded (I had to move 1 of the 2 as she was getting more PM sun than she can tolerate, now a neighbor to the E-exp one, she simply took off! The one left in the W spot did OK and sported the promised merlot color foliage change before our 1st freeze. I intend to move her in the E spot (better in the Spring as suggested by an experienced aficionado) since she did OK there for now - just didn't grow as well. I just finished partially protecting and corralling all three - will wait a week or two before more serious overwintering efforts - how did you protect yours? 'Would love to hear!!! Many thanx! ditas

Oh, Wow! You all really are making me go out and look again at what I have and wonder what you are seeing!!! I don't think I have any more special a place than you ALL do, as well!!I look at your pics. (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE to do) and I know I you can't be more in awe than I am over what you've done with your own hosta and gardens!!!! Seriously, I only have about 1/3 of a half-acre that I work with hosta plantings so it may look like I have more but I do not!! They are packed in to this small place, believe me!! Maybe it's the camera angle-shots--maybe that's it!!! Whatever it is, I am SO GLAD you are thinking so kindly of what I've presented. It's easy to make a small square look better than it is, when you block out the whole!! LOL Again, thank you guys and gals--your words warm my heart and make me appreciate even more what I take so much joy in doing!!! :o)

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful and insightful comments! I love these forums just for this reason--you bring to light issues I've never thought of and in this case, you surprised me with the number of positive responses. Regarding makeup: Never thought of the green reflecting on skin. Good point! While she is just 12, you are right that the whole primping thing is around the corner. Good thing to keep in mind. Paint: The flooring is greenish taupe and I thought that as she became more mature, we could move to the more neutral side of green--sage or greenish taupe. But, I thought I'd at least indulge this color whim and the recycled chandelier (original to the house when we bought it). I think I might try softening the paint by adding small amounts of a lighter green just to take the edge off. There's only one coat on right now, so I could easily tone it down with the next coat. Will definitely post pics when the bathroom is done! Thanks everyone!

About 20 years on the Jackmanii and Ernest Markham. They would be taller, but I forgot to tie them up as they were shooting up so a huge portion of each of them flopped down the front.

I should take a picture of my neighbor's Polish Spirit. That one is amazing given that it was just a cutting a year ago.

WOW. Maybe I should be more excited about moving to Colorado. Daughter moved to Louisville (NO 1 Place To Live according to Forbes Magazine yesterday) and is trying to get us out there. Am in Chicagoland and collect Hostas and keep telling her I don't think they'll do well there and she keeps telling me to 'find another plant'. I have twelve clems but they sure don't look like that!!!! Where are you? It looks like you have grass and trees and I can never find places with enough green when I'm out there!!!

Westy - there are a couple of houses in my neighborhood for sale (at least 1 acre lots). I'm just a bit south of Louisville, Colorado - near Rocky Flats.
And you can grow hostas if you have shade. My neighbor has quite a few.
Clematis do fantastic here. And so do roses. I have over 400 roses. Oh, and at least 200 daylilies - they love it here too. So you have lots of plants to choose from.
