What does the night bloom Epi flower smells like?

My Epi keeps blooming none stop, I love its beautiful large, pure white flower, but I don't think I really care for its scent... my nose is not very picky...I general like most of flower scents. But my Epi. seems have very strong, and dusty scent mixed with a bit alcohol... Is it because my nose? is it because of this particular variety of Epi? or is it the universal scent of night bloom Epi.?

I don't know...I LOVE the smell of my E. oxypetalum. I am not good at describing but dusty and alcohol would not be something that I would think to use. I just want to roll in it like a dog in sh-t. I want to surround myself and wrap my my body in it and sleep.

Yea, peperomias form blooms that look like 'rat tails', which I find very interesting. Do you know what type of peperomia you have? I really like yours, the leafs and short blooms are so cute. Also peperomias are not actually 'peppers', so they shouldn't have any peppery type scent...actually I've had quite a few peperomia blooms, especially my peperomia prostrata that blooms a lot all year long except in winter and I have never smelled any type of scent from them, so your very lucky, I'm jealous, I love bloom smells. Lol.

Thanks for the help, but now I have more questions! After getting this plant from my neighbor and figuring out what it was, I became interested in the species. I then swapped some other stuff for an oxypetalum (which hasn't bloomed yet). The leaf tips of the oxypetalum I got are rounded. The leaf tips on this one, as you can see, come to a point. I live in Tampa, and it's been excruciatingly hot this year. The plant hangs under a tree (I only brought it in to watch flowers open). The first night one opened, I had it inside my bedroom and there wasn't much fragrance at all. If I shoved my nose directly into the flower, I got a small wiff, that's all. I know there are millions of epi hybrids, some white. Are there different types of oxypetalums too? If this is the oxy, what's the other one I have with the rounded tips? Lori

Flower: I forgot to mention the sweet Olive.... it is the best I just love it, I go out on my patio and front porch and have to smell it every time.. it is the most beautiful sweet scent of apricots, I have 4 that are blooming right now and it's so different from any other plant I ever smelled, I ordered a synthetic oil on ebay and put it all over my house on flat cotton wipes, I even put it in the vents of my heater, it is really nice. I have 4 michelia figos that all have buds on them, they smell like very sweet ripe bananas. I also love the smell of honeysuckle, I bought a couple six packs of ground cover honeysuckle and planted them in hanging pots near my patio door, I think it will be a wonderful waft when they all come into bloom. I can hardly wait to smell them, this is my first season with all my fragrant plants. If your just getting started on fragrant plants be careful it's very very addicting but fun!!!! My other most favorite is brugmansia (Angel Trumpet), they are absolutely THE BEST! The differnt colors vary in fragrance, some smell a strong honey vanilla, others smell like a sweet lemony citrus, and another smells like a white flower scent like jasmine with the honey also. They are wonderful only smell at night, I have about 7 now and growing more, the ones by my front door smell my whole living room up when the door is open on a warm evening. So..... enjoy!!!!!! P.S. brugmansia's are very easy to root from a cutting....just stick it in water for a few weeks and stick it in the ground, they grow like weeds.

Never heard of it used for mealies. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't kill them. However, it wouldn't be enough (just like rubbing alcohol wouldn't be enough, at least for a big infestation)...you'd need to use some kind of systemic (or natural solution if you prefer that). I've tried the natural sprays like Neem Oil, and it didn't do anything except make my house smell! I hear some people have luck with fish emulsion (or whatever that's called). Back on the topic of lemon, I use GSE (grapefruit seed extract) in my mister bottle as a preventative for mealies and other bugs. I have no idea if it works or not, but I've heard good thing about it. Maybe the lemon would be similar to GSE, as a preventative. It's worth a try if you're curious. I was going to have a 45 bloom flush on my plant last night and the deer found it and ate all but 5 buds the night before. The buds had already turned their heads up and stated to swell. I was so p---ed off. I am out looking to buy a hunting rifle today..

I was given a cutting of E. oxypetalum a couple of years ago but my plant has yet to bloom for me so I'm a little envious of you guys. I grew both Cryptocereus anthonyanus and Epiphyllum anguliger until one fall I didn't get them back in the greenhouse soon enough:(. These two used to start setting buds the end of september outside where they lived from spring through summer and into fall, they bloomed though out the fall and into winter in the greenhouse, their scent to me was reminiscent of hawthorn flowers. Does anyone know where I can buy either of these two or both, I've been looking but so far no luck.

Wow, Mara. I wish I can roll in it like a dog...Maybe TX epi smells differently...it makes me wanting your Epi... I smelled my Epi. but every time, I want to run away with headache. Great description. Thanks so much.
