Beware of the Pencil Cactus
Comments (2)Im sorry you are having so much trouble with ur PC. May I ask how the sap got in your eye? It is true many plants are poisonous, prehaps as a survival technique thoughout evolution. Many plant lovers know this and use caution when handling plants and placing them in terms of pets and children. I have had a pencil cactus for two years now. It has grown beautifully and I couldnt imagine parting with it. Id rather be more careful in terms of handling. Best of luck!...See MoreBeware Of The Pencil Cactus / Succulent
Comments (14)Put me down as one that is slow to learn! I am an obsessive weed picker, I admit. I do not use chemicals in my lawn or garden because I have a 7 year old who spends a lot of time outside in the yard. I pick and pull and my neighbors think I'm nuts lol. I don't know which weed or plant it is, but every other month or so I get a rash on my fingers that blisters first (insanely itchy) and then my skin sloughs off in layers like a burn victim (excruciatingly painful). Lots of blood, pus and scabs after. It even hurts to wash my hands. I try to wear gloves as much as possible but it mainly happens when I'm walking by and spot a patch of weeds and can't resist weeding right there on the spot! I'm hopeless. If anyone knows of a South Florida weed that might be responsible I'd love to know. I'm really only picking weeds that grow low in the grass. Nothing tall or funky looking....See MoreHelp with pencil cactus
Comments (5)IF you have root rot on your upright pencil cactus, you can take BIG cuttings from it, let them dry for a few days, and pot them into a very fast draining cactus soil, and let it re-root. From the picture, it looks like the upright one is still growing, Or let the soil dry out totally, or as much as you can, no water at all till it is dry way down. That MAY stop the rot, if you have root rot. BUT is it getting ANY full direct sun on it?? It needs as much direct full sun all day as you can give it, or it will become weak and topple as it grows. I dont know what that second crawling cactus is. Is it suppose to crawl? I grow the red variety of the pencil cactus here in Fla. To get it to turn and stay red, it needs full direct sun all day. it is the 'Sticks on Fire' variety. It is in full direct sun outside all day. The green one also needs as much sun as possible, to grow sturdy and rather fast! . But it survives with less light, but just not as strong as if it was in desert conditions. I dont know where you live ,but if you can move the plants into more direct sun, and stake up the tall one, it will get stronger and stand up on its own, with minor pruning....See MorePencil Cactus breaking point??? Comments (3)Hi, Laura & Kara! Nice to see you. That is just normal callousing (corking) ... You can see where 3 or so 'branches' fell off. I've personally never had a problem with euphorbias but I know how to work with them. I recently separated a 4' pencil cactus into 6" pots for my garden group without a hitch. My (then 84 y/o) father, on the other hand, decided to be stubborn and not heed my warnings ... He took a machete to a 6' E. láctea then rinsed off his hands, threw water on his face, and rubbed his eyes like nothing. Real macho! Needless to say, he almost went blind. To make matters worse, his pride wouldn't allow him to confess to the MD what happened. I had to send him back with a note with the plant name, dangers, mode of treatment, etc. He needed his eyes flushed out immediately but lost that window as a result. He actually had a coating of láctea (like rubber glue when it dries) on his eyes. It took 3 months to clear and his vision is still not the same. Maria Elena...See MoreRelated Professionals
